OT - Is the band Muse popular?
I love this band. I think I might put all four of their CD's in my top 20 all-time list. Well maybe that's going too far but they are great.

But I am just given their CD's by the guy that makes my CD's for me - who can be a bit of a freak when it comes to music - he gets into all kinds of obscure shit - I don't have any idea of their real-world popularity.

They are so good. They have such virtuosity to their musicianship and composition. Plus they have a song about necrophilia.

    They RAWK.

I know I hear them more and more on TV show soundtracks and whatnot. They had a song in The Watchmen trailer (which, unfortunately, was not in the movie). Have you heard of them? Are they playing at big venues? Anyone have their finger on the pulse of the music industry that can shed light on the question?

I guess the thing to do here is post something from YouTube. Unfortunately they are one of these bands that you really want to be listening to on the best sound system. But let's see if I can do this anyway. The visuals on this are a bit jarring but I think it shows how they RAWK:

Sounds like RATM-meets-Radiohead. I liked that vid.

A comparison I would make would be Radiohead (the OK Computer and The Bends albums anyway) and Queen. I didn't actually love Queen but in some tracks the Muse singer definitely sounds like Freddy Mercury and they even seem like they are openly imitating some Queen harmonies at times.

They take the best parts of Queen is what i would say.

I wonder if Muse is popular in the gay community.

That vid is just one aspect. They take it up and down. Their CD's aren't just collections of singles; they have a real flow. Someone in the band must be classically trained.

Browsing around YouTube, I am getting some answers. I see them playing Wembley and other big venues in Europe but not so much in North America. Perhaps that is the nature of their popularity.

            A ballad (with freaky visuals):

YES! Someone knows. And I see you are in North America, not Europe.

The whole opening 4 tracks of the Black Holes and Revelations CD - the 4th of which is Problematique - are about as strong an opening as any album has ever had.

The opening guitar riff from Supermassive Black Hole is so good it's cruel.

Not really a huge fan of their music I must admit, all their tunes sound the same and the lead singer is a complete bellend. Saw them live a few years back at a small venue in Newcastle and their special effects were awesome, but their music sounds shit live.

Yes I am still waiting for my copy of the latest CD. I heard one single. The United States of Eurasia? Something like that?

It didn't impress me on a first listen. It really sounded like an imitation of Queen in parts. And the theme of being critical of U.S. foreign policy did not blow me away with its boldness.

I don't like the ongoing Queen influence. These guys have so much talent; it seems like Shakespeare trying to emulate Danielle Steele.

But anyway I need to get the CD and give it a few spins before I can judge.
