Three teens are accused of robbing a pizza delivery driver who happened to be an Akron police officer working undercover.
Workers at the Dominos Pizza on East Market Street contacted police Wednesday night after receiving what they felt was a suspicious delivery order to Lovers Lane, police said.
Pizza shops around Akron have been periodically plagued by robbers who order a pizza and then rob the driver of cash and pizza.
To combat future crimes, police met with business owners to have a plan in place in the event a store receives a suspicious order.
The idea worked at about 10 p.m. Wednesday, police said. The pizza shop called police after a delivery order was called in for a vacant home. An undercover officer looking like a pizza delivery driver approached the house and found himself surrounded by three teens determined to rob the ''driver.''
Nearby, more police officers approached the teens, who tried to run. The boys, ages 15 and 16, were arrested and charged with aggravated robbery in Summit County Juvenile Court. Police seized a pellet-type gun from one of the suspects.
Police are investigating to determine if the teenaged trio can be connected to similar pizza delivery driver robberies.
Capt. Daniel Zampelli said the case exemplifies the success of community cooperation and the department's Community Relations Outreach program.
