NHL general managers have given their approval to the Rangers' request for a compensatory pick in June's Entry Draft in the wake of the death of 2007 first-round selection Alexei Cherepanov, sources have told The Post.
Though it is unclear whether Article 8.3 (b) of the CBA must be amended to accommodate this specific circumstance, the Blueshirts now stand to receive the 17th pick of this year's second round following Glen Sather's presentation yesterday at the NHL GMs meetings in Naples, Fla.

Cherepanov, who was selected 17th overall in 2007, died on Oct. 13 at the age of 19 after suffering heart failure and collapsing on the bench during a KHL game in Chekhov, which is just outside Moscow, while playing for Omsk.
The Post first reported the Rangers' intention to seek the compensatory pick on Nov. 6.

    Thats really awful.

I did a podcast on this and how shitty this was of the Rangers.

Feel bad for the kid that gets drafted with this pick, too.

It's terrible what happened, but I dont think the Rangers should get a extra draft pick.

I agree. I think if a player becomes incapacitated or dies, they should not count against the cap (if they're on it, which would not be applicable in this case), but I don't think you should be giving back draft picks.

Now where do you draw the line? If a player gets paralyzed or something during a game, which would obviously be career-ending, should the team get back their pick? If a player decides to quit hockey altogether for whatever reason, should the team get back their pick?

It's a tragedy, but this was a poor decision by the NHL GMs.

Yeah, back when this happened, there was this guy I knew who was a Rangers fan and we used to chat over IM sometimes. He was really upset about it.

I think you mean "for", though, not "of".

No, I mean of. I wasn't referring to Chereponov's untimely death, I was referring to the fact that it was shitty of the Rangers to ask for the compensatory pick. I mean I know it is a business and all, but sometimes exceptions need to be made.

What would make them think they could even ask for this? Unreal. Sather is a greaseball.

                  ohhhh. OK, I agree.

I figured you were saying his death was shitty for them.

I guess for and of are both accurate in this context.
