    How I lost $40,000 today
At about 3:45 I get a phone call from an NFL team with whom I've held over 60 very lucrative season tickets for the past 7 years or so. Each year I sell them for markedly above face value and net a nice profit - all for minimal work. I have come to count on the income - at least for a few more years until their HOF quarterback retires and the tickets shrink back to being worth their face value on an open market.

The voice on the other end of the line is the VP of tickets for this NFL team, and he informs me that I won't be renewing my season tickets this year - that they're being distributed amongst "true fans" who are on the waiting list. I didn't do anything wrong and they thank me for my patronage, it's just that they are acting on their revokable license and are taking my ticket rights from me.

    Damn.

It just so happens that my bookie calls me about 2 minutes after this phone call ends - I was down a bit last week and I had gotten his cash payment ready. I say "okay, be down in a sec" and grab the cash and meet him downstairs.

As I reach his car, a thought hits me - I just lost a large chunk of my disposable income. This is life-changing... I haven't fully digested all the financial implications of what just went down with my NFL tickets, but I do realize that I can't afford to be so cavalier with my money now. I have $7000 riding on basketball games tonight, so I ask my bookie if the plays can be negated since none of the games have tipped yet. I explain that I just got some bad news and go into the ticket scenario. He says "wow that's rough man... let me call it in and make sure that the lines are still close and that it can be done."

5 minutes later I get a text. My plays are cleared. I thank him and breathe a sigh of relief, then collapse into an afternoon nap.

Now I wake up and see that (of course) all of my would-be plays are in fantastic shape and I would have stood to gain up to $7000 tonight.

This is a rough one. Probably a top 5 worst day of my life - probably the 2nd worst financial day of my life (only behind the day I got laid off 4 years ago).

Sorry to hear that man. The day the big sports really go after ticket resellers and brokers is a long way away. Easy to pick on the little guy.

This post is 100% true but I clearly did it to jinx one or more of the bets so I won't feel quite so miserable. I pray that Boston wins (don't see how that's possible though - Phoenix is playing for their lives).

How do they know you are not a "true fan"? Are they monitoring who sits in your seats? Did you post it on facebook and maybe they are spying on that?

Sold them all on ticket exchange - pretty easy to track. They knew I hadn't been to a home game in 3 years as my mailing and billing address are 1000 miles away.

Eta - no not many people know Im pretty self deprecating and only really point out negative shit that happens to me (like this). Also I kept my tickets secret bc all my friends would have constantly been hitting me up

Sucks, but based on the story you posted it seems like you have a brain and maybe saved a good amount of your ticket distribution over the years.

penetrate. Would have won $7k unless that phone call hadn't been timed EXACTLY when it was. 5 or 10 minutes later my bookie would have never heard about it. Id have never asked him that favor unless it was in person. Fml

What's the point of the forum then? Why should anybody post anything? And I don't get why people wouldn't believe this story - I have the documented plays and you have seen my NBA and NCAA plays over the past month, bro.

I was in the interesting position of rooting AGAINST my plays because my bookie did me the rare favor of cancelling them. I would have hit 5 out of 5 bets and would have won $7000. It's pretty much the worst beat of my life in a way. If that doesnt interest you than you can GET THE FUKK OUT OF THE THREAD.

I may be in the minority here, but hard to feel sorry for a guy who admittedly buys season tickets to a team he can't go to for personal profit. All you do is drive up the price for real fans that want to go to the games. Nothing more annoying than ticket brokers on game day.

BAU...dude that's like blaming your grocery store for making 10 fold profit on the food that you buy.

Rocket, it's free market. Doesn't mean I'm going to feel sorry for the guey. However, a more appropriate analogy would be saying that a bunch of guys went out and bought 70% of the groceries in the grocery store, then sold them outside for a mark up.
