Anyone here fly standby?

Im a big Detroit Tigers fan and am planning to go to first round of the playoff. Problem is since they have blown their lead dont know if first 2 games will be at home or away. Plus dont know exactly when the playoffs will start.

Anyways I live pretty far from detroit and I know if this central race goes down to the wire will not have much time in advance to buy airline tickets. So was wondering if anyone here has done standby? If so what were your experiences? Whats the price compared to just buying 4-5 days in advance? Any help is appreciated, thanks

Only experience I had was when I got laid over in Atlanta, and I had a standy by flight the next morning. I got on the plane at the last minute, and didnt think I would ever get on. If I had a choice, I wouldnt do it.

But for the pricing, I cant help on that one. Because we were just setup with the standby because we missed our connecting plane due to a delay in Gainesville.

If you're going to do it, I suggest planning on either a red eye flight or the first flight out in the morning. These flights are ususally not full ( or at least are less likely to be full) than other flights.

Plus, the earlier you get to the airport, the more chances you'll have at a seat.

Bring something to do, because you might end up sitting in the terminal for a very long time....and air port terminals get old pretty fast.

flew standby a couple of times while in college for cheap, but haven't done so in years...hell, I haven't got on a plane since 9/11...
