I am the luckiest guy in the world............
that i grew up as a kid when there was NO internet.. I feel sooo sorry for today's kids. I swear, when i was a kid, all i ever did was play hockey in the -56 degrees on the street everday with the gang, and in summer, hang out in the park and play baseball mon to sun from 8 am till it it was too dark to see anymore.. only time we came home was for our 5 min lunch breaks and a cold drink from home, then we ran back to park and meet the boys. We had no internet, we had no xbox, PS2, etc.... the parks were so full and all i did was exercise all day and be in the sun.. the parks were crowded with kids. .it was a great time. i am so happy i did not grow up as a kid today. Life was great back then. i have some great childhood memories of the park and always running around.. alwys on my bike.. it was such a happy time.

today, unlike my time, 84% of the kids are obese. in my time, fat freddy was the only fat kid in all my school. yesterday i went to pick up my nephew at school, and 84% were fat. kids today stay home all day on internet, and play video games. we never were home, we were always outdoors running around.

i feel so sorry for the kids here at sbr. if they would have grown up in the late 70's and 80's as a kid like me, they would have been much happier. life was great back then for a kid. today it sucks. they stay home all day on a gambling forum and gamble. we didn't even know what gambling was. it didn't exist. today, i know tons of kids that cant watch a hockey game unless they bet on it.. (that's sad)

today i drive by all the parks and they are empty, even in hot summer days. back then, they were packed. outdoor hockey rinks were full.. today they are emtpy.. we swam, played ball, we were never home. We were always in the sun. I was at my nephews house yesterday and i told him, lets go shoot hoops. he wanted no part of it. instead he said, lets play NHL 09.. then he wanted to listen to music on net on youtube, then showed me his ipod.. this sucks.. all these gadgets have really ruined life. they all carry cells now, we didn't..when the phone rang, it was exciting. we had no idea who it was. now we know with call display. it kills the suspense. life was so so much easier back then than today.. Todays world for kids suck.. our life was simple with no gadgets and the real fun was outdoors.. we had so much energy back then. todays kids want to stay home on internet. they are fat and out of shape. i dont see any kids on street anymore playing hockey here. they are all inside on the computer, which is why all kids are fat today, unike my time.

I feel so bad for the onner's, and the patty's of the world. the only life they know is internet, gambling and forums.. they hardly go out and enjoy the sun.. not a day goes by that i dont thank god i grew up back then and not today..

You kids out there at sbr, i feel so bad for you.. growing up today is shit compared to 20-30 yrs ago.. life was great back then, and with today's internet and gadgets, i only wish you grew up in my era.. you would have loved it much better.

Its funny, my dad would go on and on like this as well...

I used to say to him, you think I wouldn't love to go play football right now? Or soccer? Kids of my generation that wanted to be active and play just don't have that option because the rest are so lazy. I was so excited in college to play intramural sports.

life couldn't have been that great for you nicky, you turned out to be a habs fan which takes some sort of emotional abuse or something along those lines.

                Funny shit.

Nicky is correct. I do wish that Myspace and some other sites were around for my early 20's...so easy to pick up hot women. But that is the only thing. Soooo glad I grew up when you went outside and did things. Toughened you up and kept you in shape.

nicky when i was in elementary school there was no internet and every day after school we played hoops in driveways and had a blast

in late middle school when high speed internet became popular, and ps2's, we no longer played basketball in driveway, dads tore goals down because they weren't being used

i had a few years of outside play, but the kids who are 16 now grew up with a whole life of ps2 and xbox and high speed internet...

Being part of the video game evolution was actually pretty fun.

Going from NES to SNES/Sega to N64/Playstation to Xbox/PS2/Dreamcast to Xbox360/PS3/Wii, the world of technology and gaming blossomed during my generation.

Kids today only know these incredible machines as video games... they didn't start with the humble beginnings. That is what made it so fun.

that's exactly what i see here in july. all my parks i hung out as a kid at are cement now with rocks and patches everywhere. in july, that same spot had 46 kids playing baseball and in the evenings, the 3 baseball diamonds were filled with games.. kids of all ages were out there. today, those parks are deserted. they dont even have enough kids to fill 4 teams for little league. when i was young, they had to cut like 300 kids cause there wasn't enough room. today, all the kids are inside their house on the internet and playing games and getting fatter by the minute. we couldn't get fat back then if we tried.. we were always active, unlike today.

btw, why are so many people saying this is an article, these are my own thoughts. i never read anythign about this.. these are my feelings.. i am just so happy i got to grow up as a kid back then and not today. i feel so sorry for today's kids. we had it great..

I hosted a Super Bowl party every year the last 12 years or so. In the beginning, it was tradition that we all played a game of football a few hours before kickoff. One year when the SB sucked particularly bad, we even went out and played while the game was still on.

As we all got older, I said "hey guys, lets go play our game!" "ehhh, no, such and such pregame is on" "eh, my legs hurt" etc etc... and the yearly tradition died.

Always annoyed me when my dad went off on these tangents. I LOVE sports and I love playing them. No question in my mind I wouldn't be such a fat fvck today if I grew up in a time where you could go over to the park and play a game. And Nickys right, I would have loved it.

But adults seem to think we all actively made the choice to be lazy couch potatoes, but we were not really given the choice.

It is the new generation of isolation and anti social behavior and you see it with kids as they cannot communicate anymore with people.

good point jj....for example me and sammy are very boring in vids....

we are actually pretty normal...everyone is boring like us. we all grew up communicating via text and instant message....no one speaks in person any more

at college on campus everyone is texting and listening to ipods....no one wants to speak in person.

hmm well Im not sure what kids you are meeting or mentoring but the kids I know are about 3 times smarter than we were at the same point in education..they are much more able to take care of themselves, less violent with each other by a huge margin, very funny, skillful, athletic, can say no to adults when warranted for safety reasons and just plain amazing...Im very bullish on the future with thisf irst internet generation of kids as they age and start in the workforce in a decade..

davey, how can blame the parents? blame technology and society. when kids get home from school now, they run to the computer and chat and surf all night and play games.. but when we were young, we would zoom home, drop our books and go meet the boys in the alley for a big hockey game from 4pm till we no longer can see ball anymore cause it got dark. and weekends, i was never home.. 4 hrs of hockey, then go home, eat, then 4 hrs of baseball, then come home, eat supper, 3 hrs of touch footbal, with some basketball, then come home when it's dark to watch hockey night in canada. those were the days.. no fukkin internet or ipods..etc...etc.. just out all day running around in the sun and getting the heart going. i swear, i would eat eat eat and all junk too, and was always thin.. because we moved around, not like today.. every kid is fat. it's so sad.

I was saying technology (as you have already mentioned) and crime (kids can't just run around in parks without parent supervision anymore) were the reasons, not parents.

Nicky how ya been? I think i wrote a post like this about ten times. Same shit here. Fields are empty when we had to get up early just to get one. We use to play from 8 in the morning till u couldn't see the ball anymore. Only break was for dinner and this is another dying fad. We use to get our ass beat if we were not home for dinner. These days all these broken fukin families u can't find any that sit down at the table together. Right after dinner we were back at it. Street hockey, baseball, football, heck and even basketball. The neighborhood against neighborhood games were the best and nastiest games ever just for bragging rights. These cell phones are the funniest tho. I don't know how we survived without them. I finally got one of those minute phones that i pay about 25 dollars a year and still have minutes left. People say Thor give me ur cell number and i say i don't have one cause basically I don't. Only thing these kids have over us is a lot less arthritis cause of all that banging we did was kinda tough on the body. These kids today will all have diabetes. Some of these kids today u need a fork lift to move the fukers. Heck even today these young broads think nothing about blowing a guy. When i was in high school only one girl was getting laid and everyone knew who it was. In todays world there is only a handful in high school that are not getting laid. Shit even middle school. Heck they are all being passed around like a joint at a dead concert.

the real culprits in this mess are those lousy politicians who created these one sided trade deals to kill jobs in our country so they can promote greed. Now both parents have to work and the temptation of cheating is to great. Mom use to run thehousehold and dad use to work. Now both paerents have to work and pretty soon families are gonna have to have an extra kid just to send that little fuker to work just to afford shit. Politicians fuked us big time with these one sided deals to kill off good manufacturing jobs.

It was intense. If there is that slight chance u find a game today im not even sure those kids keep score. Shit when i lost i took it home with me. I was a screamer to Nick. Demanded every one play as hard as i was. Most did. You'll never find stuff like that again. Those kids play and couldn't care less if they won or loss. Heck when i was 21 i started coaching ball. Im not even sure those leagues still exist. A few of us would play a game where u would see who could last the longest running. Like one guy chased the other. Shit would go on close to an hour. These kids couldn't run ten feet without stopping at Starbucks for a latte.
