Doesnt it say under the 1961 wire act that is illegal to place sports wagers through a phone line? Well I have satellite internet for my laptop from verizon so wouldnt that count as a loophole? Im sure they will still find some kind of way to say its not allowed. I dont understand why they are pissed about sports betting online. Is it cause USA money leaves the country? If so what about the 11 million people here illegal u know they are sending funds back to mexico or whatever country they are from. Is it cause they cant tax it? Once again goes back to those 11 million illegals that arent paying taxes costing us in the billions of dollars and last yr alone we spent 20 BILLION dollars paying for illegals that went to our hosiptals. So dumb I have to pay medical insurance then they all come here and cause my bill to go up. That right there alone would save us 20 billion dollars. The sportsbetting market doesnt even reach that high it is estimated to be about a 12-15 billion market. We have all these major problems to worry about and we worry about the least important 1s like this crap.

#2Betting on sports from the phone or internet is highly illegal unless you live in Nevada and bet only in Nevada.
That is fact, the USA if they wanted can block all of us from sportsbook in about 2 days just by forcing ISP providers and they would comply.Comment -

#4The law is very very broad but I would think any communications can be enforced.Comment -

#5You're both wrong.
There is no federal law against PLACING a bet online or by telephone. The Wire Act targets people in the business of betting, not the bettors.
The Wire Act does not talk about telephone lines, it refers to transmission through a "Wire communications facility." Unless your laptop signal goes straight up to a satellite and then back down to some offshore location, your internet is going through a "Wire communications facility" in the United States at some point. All wireless networks in the US eventually go through a land based network in the US.Comment -

#6i just love all laws. They are meant to be unclear so they can sock it to ur ass if they need to lol. Yes but arent we in the business of betting by placing bets? I see sportsbetting as nothing more than a different type of stock. You invest and hope to not go bustComment -

#7I believe that JC's analysis is correct here...other than some states that have laws, I think it's in the grey area federally...Comment -

#8All each state has to do is ban players from placing bets on the phone or internet like Washington did.
It is actually very simple without any SenateComment -

#9Yes, any state could make online gambling illegal if they wished - most dont care.
Problem is the states need to make enforaceable laws. 15-20% of people in this country gamble online. Right now .8% of people are in prison and the prison load creates a humongous debt.
They can not put 15-20% of the people in this country in prison (Especially when online gamblers generally have above average income and taxes)
Additionally, it will be very hard to get a jury to convict someone of placing a bet when 20% gamble and even harder to get them to convict when that person faces 5 years in jail.
Likely your best defense is: Yes, I bet a football game online with my own money. Do you think I should go to jail for 5 years? Most likely 1 jury member will say no.
A more sensible law would be something like:
If you gamble online you'll be fined $50 like a parking ticket
See this would be enforceable...
