I get where you're coming from with that comment but I wonder. I'm sure a few people would keep themselves informed and have reactions on issues like that but overall, it is amazing how apathetic and uninformed Canadians are about politics.

It's interesting to compare the citizens of the two countries. While the level of political ignorance is pretty much equal - what we do with our ignorance is almost the opposite. Americans become extremely vocal and opinionated. It's almost an inverse proportionality. The less an American knows - the stronger his opinions and the louder he gets.

Canadians just shrug about the whole thing. When informed Canadians speak up, no one even pretends to listen.

Obama looks good, he sounds good. I think it would take something really big and splashy to put a dent in his popularity here.

At least in the US you can elect in a new senator if you don't like them. In Canada, they are appointed on the Prime Minister's recommendation, for life (until mandatory retirement at age 75), and earn a $130k salary, to do nothing except rubber stamp any bill that makes it through the House.

US Senators get a very nice retirement deal, and I believe they are fully vested in the plan (maybe Reps as well in the House) after five years. And sometimes I wonder if some of them having a lifetime appointment wouldn't be better for us as the ones that leave wind up often on the side of the lobbyists peddling their influence with more 'inside information.'
