The coach doesn't know the spread. He put the bench warmers in and told them to play. You don't run out the clock if you are up by 24 with 4 min to play.

You run out the clock if you are up by 6-10 points because you know they will foul if you miss and the spread is around 6-7 points. With the score 24 points up you don't have to run out the clock because the other team doesn't have enough possessions to bring it down to 6-7 and start fouling.

When the spread is above 8-9 points the teams usually do not foul. So you have to take that into consideration when betting on a -12 to -14 spread. You are basically in the mercy of the shooters who being up will not take good shots and will not play defense knowing they won the game and the spread is not a factor in the game plan.
