Honestly, the #1 thing that has stuck out like a sore thumb to me?
Young mothers.
Every time I see a fit looking girl my age or younger get out of a car, she always goes to the other door and unleashes a little child.
You see huge billboards about Jesus, churches...
Next to the local Best Buy is a Christian book store called CHRIST IS KING. Literally next door.
They take this pro-life stuff seriously down here. In Los Angeles, most of these babies wouldn't have seen the light of day.

yup! we don't kill the babies.. just everyone else that so much as spits on the sidewalk
seriously.. it is against religious beliefs to end a pregnancy.. and SA is heavily catholic.. and yes, of course, there are still many abortions.. but that is why you see so many young mothers too..

Another thing, as Robust mentioned, people are much nicer here.
It is going to take me a while to slow down to this city's pace. Los Angeles is so hussle bussle... here, when I opened my bank account, the woman asked all about my job, told me about her daughter's bball team, and was just genuinely friendly. You don't meet people like that in Los Angeles.
Another sick thing about the bank experience; THERE WAS NO BULLET PROOF GLASS! You could actually see the bank tellers right in front of you! Never seen that before in my life.

Also, the fast food here is beyond ridiculous. Sure, there is plenty of it in any big city; but its usually spread out a bit. At USC (and near most colleges) there was a fast food row, but this whole damn city is a fast food row.
Since people are friendlier and actually talk with you and get to know you, there seems to be less emphasis on physical appearance, so plenty of people don't give a damn and just enjoy the delicious food. Unlike superficial LA where you are immediately judged based on your looks and you need to eat at chic sushi bars, here, you just go for it all. I can respect that, even if it clashes hard with my personal goal to lose weight at the moment.

More dudes wearing tight Wrangler jeans in Texas. It's my understanding that's the primary reason VD took the job.

Have a few more I'll share.
Cute young white girls working minimum wage jobs - This one is a double whammy. Rarely if ever do you see young white girls working in Subways or Targets or Wendys in California. Cute ones? Never. Most of the cute little princess-types either don't have to work because they are spoiled silly, or they get jobs where the emphasis is on them looking adorable. Apparently out here, they get put to work like everyone else. I'm not complaining.
Wallmart Super Center - Oh. My. God. If this is what it means when corporations bastardize America, then sign me up. This place has everything; literally, everything. Huge grocery store. Huge department store. Huge home improvement store. Everything. You could go up to the cashier with this in your cart;
Lipton Iced Tea
Hammer
Pillow Case
Last Action Hero on DVD
Rake
Dress shirt
Tire
Filet Mignon
Comforter with matching towels
John Grissom Novel
Light Bulb
And they wouldn't even flinch because they see this every day.
Open 24/7 to boot.

Nope. Apparently they are pretty standard in most places, but they didn't even have regular Walmarts anywhere close in Los Angeles.

Dave, we are friendly down here. Nice looking women and plenty to go around. As far the banktellers out in the open, there is a reason for that. We like to shoot things(people included) here in Texas. Especially those that fvck with our wife or money. A robber would have to be a moron to try some silly shit here, where good citizens are not only allowed to carry guns, but encouraged to do so. Not to mention, Huntsville is just a few hours away, where we like to fry up a couple of 'em that made it that far.

There are no Wal-Marts in urban centers, they're all on the outskirts or in the suburbs. Only time I've been in a Wal-Mart was when I was visiting NYC and staying at a hotel in Secaucus, NJ. Looked like a dingy warehouse more than a store.
Seems like Dave is switching teams, from Starbucks America to Wal-Mart America.

Cool. I assume that Starbucks isn't nearly as big there as it is in blue states? Negative stigma?

Well I think there are more locations in central San An then the outskirts where I am, but it certainly isn't every single corner like it is in LA.

Retama Park! But what annoys me still is that they don't have legalized card rooms here in Texas. I can't believe I can not play TEXAS HOLD'EM in TEXAS. My live game skills are going to decline out here sadly.

I dont why they dont legalize it either. After all the game is call TEXAS fvcking hold 'em. And the one state where it isnt legal is Texas.
But there are plenty of card games around. Just gotta meet someone and get in the game. Find what limits you like to play. You can find 10 different games on a particular night, but one will have 100 buy in, while another will be 1000.

I'm sure I could, but I'd prefer to keep it legal. The last thing I need is to go on a sick run and turn a couple hundred into a couple thousand and then getting the snot beaten out of me by some back-room thugs and having my winnings "confiscated".
