if you have the IP, ping it.. see if you get a response.. most kids don't bother hiding their IP and are busted..

do a tracert to get dns.. see what provider they are on.. might be your buddies messing with ya..

and lastly.. if you have a cable modem or such high speed internet, it happens ALL the time.. close up the ports and set your firewall to not respond.. they won't even see ya this way..

I have a quirky connection (verizon wireless broadband) through bluetooth via laptop. I get sniffed about 250 times a day

        HA!!

blue tooth.. verizon.. cellular companies will search their own network constantly to check who is on to allocate bandwidth accordingly..

        goto the dosprompt and type:

        tracert <ip address>

and wait for the name of the connection.. does it have verizon or vw or whatever on it?

The source of the port sniffer could possibly be a compromised machine. So it may not be the direct culprit, but following Robust's directions will enable you to find the location of the machine executing the port sniffing software. I would assume that, in order for you to know that you are being port sniffed that your PC is directly connected to your cable modem or DSL. I would advise you to get a router/firewall and have it installed to further shield yourself from potentially malicious attacks.

use zonealarm or similar firewall software..

and no need to wait.. trace them!

You're allowed 5GB/month under most plans...

Go to www.GRC.com and check your ports then adjust your firewall if needed.
