I just had Sultans of Swing play on my hi-fi, and I have decided that Mark Knopfler is the greatest guitarist of all time. I use to think Chet Atkins, but as I get older I'd rather listen to Dire Straits.
Opinions?

Django Reinhardt. Only had two complete fingers on his fretting hand and he played like a madman.
In the narrow, modern blues/rock/metal category, I'm partial to Steve Vai.
Knopfler is good. Impeccable technique and great Strat tone.

same here bro. never heard a band that can be mentioned in the same sentence as Tool.
I knew it the first time I heard Undertow back in the day.
Finally see them live in '06 on the 10K days tour.

Too many to name. I'd push for Knopfler, Clapton, BB King and Atkins just because their sound was more unique than others. Like Stevie Ray.

Clapton is over rated.
Some of the other names mentioned above are good. Add LESLIE WEST

You should go check out Maynard when he does his winery tours, I talked with him for a few minutes, I was the last one there.. I bought a case of the wine and he signed all of them for me.... here is his winery...
Award-winning Arizona wine from Tool's Maynard James Keenan. Shop Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards, join the wine club, or visit our Jerome, AZ tasting room.
He is currently doing whole foods now...
Tool is second to none, no band should ever be mentioned in the same sentence.

You guys are in to many popular picks. If you want one of the best guitar players, here you go this is a guy that Steve Vai and Joe Satriani think is one of the best...if not the best guitar player on the planet). Enjoy:

Wow, you guys are good. I can't believe I failed to pay respects to Richie Blackmore and Eric Clapton. Those guys would definitely round out a Top 3 for me, and I guess poor Chet would get finish out of the money in fourth place. Here are the songs I'd want to listen to by these three if I could only take three songs on an iPod to a deserted island.
Mark Knopfler (w/ Dire Straits) - Brothers In Arms
Ritchie Blackmore (Blackmore's Night) - Diamonds And Rust
(I love his Deep Purple stuff, but this cover blows me away each and every time I listen to it, you guys really should download it)
Eric Clapton - Wonderful Tonight
(First song I ever slow danced to with a girl, still a good memory)

Forgot to mention an old favorite of mine, Mike Keneally... played with Zappa in the 80's. Low profile dude and total virtuoso.

John McLaughlin...no one else is even close
John McLaughlin is the greatest guitar player of all time, no one else even comes close.
Between Nothingness and Eternity is his best work.

I live in the southeast, from what I have seen all his signings have been in Arizona/ Cali.
I keep up with all the news of Maynard/ Tool/ APC/ Puscifer as best I can. I was gonna order a bottle when the first batch came out but never did. but I do have every album, DVD, and a few bootleg DVDs of every project he's been involved in.
for some reason the man just intriques me.

Me and you are alike. I think Maynard is the man! I also am a strong believer in all his lyrics and I relate my life to his music. I really identify with APC lyrics and Puscifer rocks!! I saw Tool at the Pearl not to long ago in Vegas it was a great show but the best is when they played here in Santa Barbara, we have a curfew here at the Santa Barbara County Bowl for all music to be shut down by 10 and Maynard said screw that and now TOOL is not welcome back here, but it was a good show.. I personally think Maynard is the one person in this world that I think exactly alike on his views.. You are correct all the signings are local, I will be going to another one, keep in touch and I can get you a bottle at the next one or something.. good to know there is another Maynard admirer!!

Holdsworth with Jean Luc Ponty was pretty hot work. I liked his work with Tony Williams. Never got into Holdsworth's solo work. UK had some bright moments.
I like Di Meola, one of my favorite pieces of music is the CD with Paco, McLaughlin and Di Meola.

Michael Romeo, John Petrucci, Holdworth, Jones, Hammett. Actually the best player in the world would be me. Only thing is I sit in my basement and play.
