work problem

ok...here goes

in work i use their computer to go on here espn and some web forums ( IMDB,fatwallet..etc) NO PORN or any shit like that, really, well i got a warning about it back in October, i said fine, okay i would not do it anymore, in January i got another warning about about going to...GOOGLE, they don't want me using a flipping search engine, i told them, i use it for spelling on calls outs/work orders ( where things need to be spelled correctly and they block online dictionary's) so i argued it and bit and couldn't do anything about it, well 2 days ago i was using my flash drive for calls outs. ( i type the same things in every call out: name, called in, due in..etc.. so i have it saved to a word file since i use it daily and they don't allow us to save stuff on their computers) super saw it and said you cant have things plugged in our comps. i told her my reasoning for using it, she still said no, so here i am a few weeks ago on myspace and i add my super as a friend, all is well till a few nights ago, ( the same night she saw the drive) when she removed me as a friend on myspace, why? I didn't do anything personally to her, plus if they dont want us using google/flash drives BLOCK them, like they block everything eles on them computers

Sounds like an uptight work environment. I wouldn't be a wise person to consult on dealing with authority, but I have a suggestion. Get a netbook, use it at work for personal needs and during breaks. They are cheap these days ($200 or so) and nice to have for traveling etc. That way you aren't using the work computer for anything considered questionable.

She probably unfriended you b/c she thought her using myspace was some sort of weakness or alternatively encouraged you to take light of work/internet restrictions. I think the google thing is ridiculous but then again if I ran a business, knowing what I know about how much surfing at work takes place, I would probably heavily restrict the use of internet. Buy a dictionary and bring it in (might even be tax deductible), it would say a lot about how you respect the rules but also makes a statement about how it would be easier to do things your way.

As for the flash drive, I think this policy is warranted. There are many business where trade secrets, confidential or merely "sensitive" material is readily obtainable once you are inside. It is in the business' best interest to cover their ass and having a blanket rule like this is reasonable. Follow the rules, play nice, and if you REALLY need to use it get permission for that single use.
