Never mind. Suns looking to next year. Okafor's contract is up after the season and they get a protected pick for next year.

Because they are grooming Len to play centre and Okafor has proven to be more suited to PF (nice little combo with Nene towards the back end of last season).

It's a pure dump move. They can either trade Okafor later or just let his contract expire. The Suns could have 4 number 1 picks next year.
I would pound Phoenix to go under the 21 wins now.

Obviously Phoenix is going to suck this year, however I read and article a couple of days ago where Gortat said he won't give up the the C position without a fight. It appears he saw the writing on the wall. Suns are quite happy with Len and see him as their long term starting C, hence Gortat is/was expendable (far too good and expensive to come off the bench). It's great that they got an expiring contract whilst in rebuilding mode, however they still need to win some games this year. Nobody likes a 12 win team and basketball is a business, you need talent to play exciting basketball even if you are losing. Bums on seats pays the bills. Okafor slot right in at power forward with Markief then further strengthening their bench.

I agree, can understand the Suns perspective who are rebuilding but not necessarily the Wizards, who (according to John Walls sneakers) are contending for the playoffs now, this season. Okafor had nice chemistry with Nene in Washington. Now the Wizards will probably start Booker at PF with Harrington off the bench, about as weak at the 4 as it gets (only Philly is worse).

Gortat has been a complete douche and shit teammate and locker room cancer.
Suns have been trying to quietly get rid of Gortat for a while now.
Good trade. Get rid of that POS, get back a decent vet with an expiring contract and now have 4 1st rd picks next draft.

Yup, potential of having 6 1st round picks in the next 2 years. Gortat was gone by mid season regardless. McDonough cleaned house. Lots of options for the Suns in the next few years.

I believe all 3 1st round picks are protected up to a certain number. Nonetheless its a good move considering they got rid of multiple other players along with Gortat. No point in keeping Gortat. Heard they will likely deal Dragic as well and considering his already 27 and their still multiple years away might as well get some more draft picks.

Yeah, some were confusing. I'm not a huge basketball guy but they were talking about it locally all day. Some picks being protected top 12 then next year the pick drops to protected top ten, good for 5 years, something to that effect. No talk that I've heard of Dragic being moved. He is signed on for this season and next and has a player option for 2015-16 season. They have cleared out most of their long term contracts and are saving up cap space. Locally, people are applauding McDonough's moves. The Suns will be a shit show for a while, but the books are cleared to make moves.

Wizards top 12 protected
Minnesota top 13 protected
Indy top 14 protected
Indy is a lock to be below 14, Wiz have a solid squad now and should beat up on the bottom of the East, and the Wolves should make a run at the playoffs with Love and Rubio finally being healthy. So the Suns should have at least 3 1st round picks, if not 4, in the deepest draft in the last decade. Throw in Bledsoe, Len, Dragic and a shit load of cap room and the Suns just pulled off one of the best rebuild I've ever seen.

I guess the Wiz guaranteed they're in the playoffs now.
You have the Heat, Knicks, Pacers, Bulls, Nets as the only teams ahead of them right now.

The PHX owner is very poor by the NBA standards: he has to be a cheapskate to actually earn money in the NBA. PHX will not be a playoff team until they get a new owner (or somehow luck out into getting another Nash caliber player at a bargain price). I hope this answers your question. Welcome to the old Clipperland, PHX fans.
