OT: Skipping Jury Duty in NY
Anyone ever do this without contacting them. I've cancelled 3 times due to a legitimate health reason, now they said I need a note from my doctor that I'm not sure I can get. What will happen if I don't show?

In Massachusetts they will issue a summons, followed by a delinquency notice, followed by a criminal complaint. I had a complaint issued against me because I moved out of MA and into NY and my mother didn't forward my summons or notice. Called the office of Jurors and had the complaint dismissed upon proof of my move. Should be substantially similar in NY.

If you can show up do it, if not you should be able to provide documentation why not.

I'm trying to get a note from my chiropractor so I never have to go. I have a compressed disc in my lower back that kills me when I sit for extended periods of time. Is this a legitimate excuse?

Hrmm... I doubt it... I'm pretty sure you can never get a "lifetime" excuse like that, might work each time though... Let me look at some information here but I wouldn't be surprised if they would be willing to accommodate you (I mean how do you do anything for an extended time), maybe they would let you stand...

Tell them that you know everyone brought up on charges is guilty.

            They will excuse you.

Yeah w/o looking at the case law it looks like you are out of luck. They are required to make accommodations for your disability but jury duty is still mandatory. Be wary of making claims that you think will disqualify you but in fact they will be more than happy to meet. What I mean is if you state your disabilities are not accommodated one of the solutions is to reassign you to somewhere they will be met (any court in the state). Definitely try the doctor though, worth a shot.

Just talked to chiropractor. He said he could write me an excuse to get out for the next year.

Loacally, the federal court sends a marshall/deputy/police to go find and arrest you and bring you before the judge THAT same day..

the other court does not and usually lets it go.. just a matter of the judges call..

I would go with a note..

I'm not sure about how NY does it, helicopter, and not sure how judges might vary from one county or precinct to another. But I know a sure fire way to not get picked. Once they put you on a panel and take you into voir dire process. The first time they ask a general question to the panel, like maybe they'll ask, "Has anyone ever gone through a divorce and think they might be predisposed to one verdict or another," raise your hand and when they call on you, simply state, "I think the defendant/plaintiff is guilty."

Also, if they ask about your religious background, tell then you're Druid - Reformed.

Or if they have you fill out anything and ask your occupation, write down "programmer." Neither the prosecutor nor the defense attorney want anyone that is prone to following logic.

And lastly, appear indecisive when they ask any questions. Or if they ask you a question, answer with a question. Example: Does anyone here have any personal experiences, either yourself or a family member, who has been committed to a mental health facility? You raise your hand, have a visible twitch in your head motion, and reply, "What do you mean by mental health?"
