Have had good success with the following over the years, and affordable
Ballys (affordable and nice) - nice book
Harrahs - cheaper, younger crowd
Luxor - decent
Paris - decent
All the books at the larger properties are about the same. Plus if
you don't like one just go for a 5 minute walk to another.

Right, a little pricier would be places like:
Mandalay bay
MGM
Ceasers
Wymm
bellagio
Rio
All very nice, all nice books, a shade more spendy
than the first 4 i mentioned.

Mandalay bay is nice...I stayed there and at THEhotel which is attached to Mandalay bay (their newer Suites Section) also really really nice. You are going at a decent time of year in which prices are going to be in your favor so you might be able to get a nicer place like the second group that Slicker mentioned for a very decent price.
Also around the corner (just off the strip) is the Palms and also the Rio. Both of those places are pretty nice too and a little bit of a younger crowd over there. Depends on what you are looking for to be honest.

Stay away from... Circus Circus, Excalibur, Imperial Palace, and Tropicana.
Lean towards... Wynn, Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Venetian, and Mirage.

I have to agree with you Bread. I actually always stay at TI when I go to Vegas. I'm thinking about going in May, but may also head to the Bahamas instead. Nice travel deals on right now.
You can't beat TI. Their rooms are nice, it's located at the best part of the strip, practically attached to Fashion Show mall where you can reload on booze, but unfortunately watered down, weak tasting and low alcohol content American beer.

I've stayed at Excalibur and Imperial Palace and they were both fine. I stayed at the Bellagio the same trip I also stayed at the Excalibur and the room at the Bellagio was only marginally better (was a newly-renovated room at Ex).
I would just suggest:
- staying on the strip
- don't bother spending a lot on a room; you probably won't spend much time there anyway
- exception to that is if you are going to hang out by the pool. If that is in the plans then it is probably worth it to stay at a place with a nice pool (Mandalay, Bellagio, Mirage, etc)

WELL, what is it you want to do there? You said "Best sporbooks and rooms" is that what you plan on doing? Sitting in your room or sitting in a sportsbook? Not anything wrong with that, but for your first time in vegas....?
Are you going with friends, chicks or by yourself ? How many days will you be there? Not that any of that really matters to us, but there is lots of shit to do there. Give us a better idea on what exactly your looking for, and Im sure some here will have good suggestions. Anyways, have fun when you go.

Too many (good and bad lol) experiences to list. Here is a site http://www.tix4tonight.com/index.html, you might use for last min. discounted show tickets, they have a few diff. locations in vegas. Look on the website under locations. They say lines form early but during the week I cant imagine them being to bad.
Going during the week, like you are, is way better imo (cheaper too). Alot more elbow room and alot less waiting time for anything you want to do.As far as specific places to go or to see, thats your personal pref. It's a place where you can go w/o a plan and have the time of your life.
Stay on the strip. ( I dont anymore but for your first time it's a must.)
Tip your drink servers well.
Stay away from the roulette tables.
Have fun.
