Yeah, exquisite carpentry, Mike. It's horrible that someone with your obvious talent doesn't have more work than he can handle. If things get too bad, there's always medical marijuana to fall back on. People always give up their vices last, that's why drugs, gambling and prostitution are the most recession proof industries, other than the necessities of life.

I've already been down the Mary Jane road, thats what I did before learning a skill but gave it up when my first son was born and after being busted a couple times. I decided it was time to grow up and move on. Cant say the thought hasnt been fresh in my mind these past few months though. Gotta feed the family so how.

thanks for the compliments from all.

Good stuff, Mike. Not sure where you're doing it, but the custom home market hasn't really taken that much of a hit in this area (Central Texas, north of San Antonio). One of the bro-in-laws builds and he's turned work down lately, though part of that is he's a lazy ass like me and would rather spend more time in the garden.

                  Hope the digit heals.

I'm in Southwest GA, the custom homes are still selling but nothing like it was a couple years ago, and not near as many being built.
In turn everyone is fighting for the few houses that are being built and cutting each others throats. bascially working for peanuts just to get the job and stay busy.
My philosphy is that I can stay home and go broke, no need to work for free and go broke.
I'm down to just 1 builder that is loyal to me now and hes not building many houses. 2 yrs ago I had about 5 or 6 builders and more work than I could do.
Once things turn around though it will be for the better cause this recession will have weeded out all the fly by night guys.

Yeah what helped a little here was Hurricane Ike last September. Quite a few subs are still over in the Galveston/Houston area doing fix-it work. Hope things do turn around soon for everyone.

stitches come with the job. that was the latest job related injury.
I've shot a nail in my leg and had to get it cut out, fallen off a roof, and shot nails in my fingers and hands more times than I can remember. but cutting my finger scared the shit outta me. I instantly grabbed my hand and didnt want to look at it cause I just knew a finger was gonna be missing luckily it wasnt to bad.
but my helper is missing a finger

I visited Santa Rosa beach this past summer and drove around the areas you mentioned. there was alot of work and as you said mostly 3M and up houses. I would love to be able to move there and work. but I dont know anyone there and if its anything like it is here its hard to get a builders work being a new guy. alot of things here run on the good ole boy system, you gotta know someone.

                                              Are you still building?

yea, I have worked in Leesburg, and Albany since I started doing this about 12 yrs ago.
Leesburg about 5 yrs ago was the fastest growing county in the nation. now the economy has caught up with us and the work has dried up. I've been contacting builders from surrounding areas but everyones in the same boat right now. just sitting and waiting to see whats going to happen

I would love to be able to move there and work. but I dont know anyone there and if its anything like it is here its hard to get a builders work being a new guy. alot of things here run on the good ole boy system, you gotta know someone.

                                                  Are you still building?
Yes when I can get the right contract/job I still work. I made my money the last 10 years here on the condo boom. Granted thats come to an end, but still do some commercial stuff.

Its tough everywhere, dont feel alone. The only guys I see really staying strong are the hard wood floor guys. For whatever reason that doesnt seem to have taken the same hit as other re-model work.

If your interested in hard wood floor carpentry work let me know, and I will see what I can do with a guy I know here.
