Its college, bruh.

Any number of reasons why the back-up may be better than the first string QB and still may not start. The coach may think they'll have the game in hand so may not give a shit, the QB's may be so close in talent that the more senior player always gets the start, etc.

I just love how JaDeveon Clowney has been exposed as very over-hyped. He will still probably be the top defensive draft pick, but Ha'sean Clinton-Dix is the top defensive player in college. Vinnie Sunseri is very, very good as well.

I'm not going to say the backup is better than the starter, but he is better than most backups. It's not going to matter to the main play (UCF +7 will still win) but, I'm not so sure they are guaranteed to dominate all aspects of the game.

That play he made in the Michigan game was the worst thing to happen to him. I bet ESPN showed that play about 3,500 times during the offseason along all their networks (and that is literally my best guess at how often I believe that play was shown). That play was what ignited the obscene hype machine and turned him from a really good d-lineman to surefire Heisman Trophy winner. Problem is that while he is a really good d-lineman, he's not Heisman caliber.

I remember the first game of the season that Thursday night against UNC. South Carolina had the ball something like 11 minutes in the 1st quarter to only 4 minutes for UNC. And despite that ridiculously imbalanced time of possession, the guy was too gassed to start against UNC's first drive of the 2nd quarter.
