To make a decent recommendation I'd have to know how you like to occupy your time. I'm an outdoorsy guy so I'd live in the North Bay where I'd have easy ocean access and lots of trails to hike. Someone who likes the city life would probably be better off in Daly City/San Bruno, someone who bets the ponies would probably be happier in Berkeley. There's more diversity in lifestyle within SF than any other place in the U.S., the options are limitless.

ok, gold. i believe you. i still need to finish up some business before i head back home. i'll meet up with you when the weather is nicer.
rs, i want to live in an area so i don't have to drive. and i don't have to worry about getting mugged walking outside or carrying couple g of cash to/from neighborhood western union. i hate noise and pollution. any recommendations?

I'd say anywhere in the Richmond or Sunset Districts right in San Francisco, pico. The breeze coming in off the ocean always keeps the air fresh and clean, the crime rates are the lowest in the city, and there's always a bus going by to take you someplace else. Living within the San Francisco city limits isn't cheap, think $1,800+/mo. for two bedrooms in the low crime neighborhoods. If that's not feasible, let me know and I'll tell you about some other options.
