Bread once I realised my huge chalk experiment failed I cut my losses at $1000 and moved on.

The reason it doen't work is because you should have a qualifying round first to screen the pretenders from the contenders and leave the best of the best to compete to make you money. Since anyone can enter at anytime in this contest with a new pick as long as they haven't picked before you are basically in the mercy of their picks.
