Other Forums are experiencing problems - Explanation

Many sports forum sites have been experiencing hacker attacks since early August. They are asking for a "consultants fee" to end the attacks.

Depending on the tech team and type of attack it can take anywhere from a couple of days to a week to get mitigation services on board. There are short term and long term steps that are involved so you may see a site come back up in the short term and continue to have problems until the long term solutions are implemented.

If your home forum is experiencing problems rest assured they are doing their best to defeat the attacks. Inhouse techs must work with a 3rd party mitigation service. In other words inhouse techs can not solve these attacks.

We continue to experience intermittent attacks that started in early August and continue to effect secondary services such as email.

To conclude, your forum management and techs are doing everything they can. Check back with them periodically.

I kind of suspected another forum in the early going but then they too have been attacked.

If I had any suspicions I'd probably be smart to keep them to myself because they would likely be wrong. We were offered an extremely large ransom request err consulting fee, which makes me think the attacker is not aware how small we are or how bad the industry has been hit. Could of been they didnt want a fee and that was a ruse.

Our position is it doesn't matter who is doing it. If the present group can then anyone could in the future.

John, do you remember back in the day when a lot of the cr books were getting extorted to pay a fee or else they'd get ddos'd? and then amerian data stepped in and started offering ddos protection. what a good racket that must've been.

Yes I saw that. My guess is that is a configuration issue connected with their security mitigation service. Hopefully that's all it is. But it may be some other angle the attackers have employed.

Forums in general terms expose a lot of doors for hackers to enter the website servers. They are very difficult to secure and still have them function properly. It's a game of cat and mouse as they close one breach the attacker will sneak in another. They will solve it.

If I was a betting man, and I am, I would bet it is a configuration problem that looks to Google, McAfee, ect that there is a virus on their site when in reality it is probably the mitigation service. I seriously doubt it is dangerous to visit their site. We have had those same issues with false virus indications. Although I have to emphasize I'm speculating.
