Good list and agree with most of the ratings. I think there are 2 different kinds of NFL head coaches, though.

First, are great motivators and coaches that are always able to keep the team focused and get the players to play to the best of their ability - or better. I would put Cowher and Gruden at the top of this list.

Second, are the coaches that are great with the X's and O's of the game. They know the opponents so well that they are able to put their players in the best position to suceed. Top of this list is definately Bellichik, Martz (no longer head coach, then maybe Holmgren.

I think Parcells is one of the best coaches ever and is rare because he combines both of the 2 styles.

i don't think the game has passed gibbs by JJ. he did show signs of life in the playoffs last season even without having a quality QB.

                  Right on, Scotty.

Parcells, Belichick and Shanahan would get my top three votes.

all I know is I'm glad the Rams fired Martz's ass...he was truly terrible as a head coach...now he's doing what he does best, running an offense...

                      A)
                      Bellichick
                      Parcells
                      Gibbs
                      Shanahan

                      B)
                      Cowher
                      Gruden
                      Holmgren

                      C)
                      John Fox
                      Andy Reid
                      Marty Schottemheimer
                      Tony Dungy

The rest are in the "D" range, or too little info available as an NFL head coach. Then again, Bellicheck was probably a "D" or "F" NFL Head Coach after his stint in Cleveland. Most of the lowest rung will have a chance to redeem themselves. Who will succeed?
