In my experience, the population as a whole has very little idea what you're talking about when you say you are a mod on a posting forum. They don't assume it is something you would do compulsively from sun-up to sun-down, and they don't assume you are constantly associating with bad people.

They don't look at it as being good, bad or indifferent. They don't have any idea. Most human beings just aren't familiar with public internet forums.

In my experience, the reaction is about the same as me saying I am a sports writer. There is no reason to be tricky about introducing the idea to a new love interest.

There is also no reason a mod has to be any more compulsive and anti-social about his job than anyone else. Some are. Some aren't.

You over-dramatize and focus on the stuff you want to see while ignoring the parts that don't fit the conclusion you are trying to reach. It is just a job.
