#8Which team, exactly, would be willing to give up their closer at this point? Hell, there are only about 10 out there that are worth a damn in the first place, and almost all of them are pitching for contenders.Originally posted by DeuceAll the money in the world to spend and they could land anyone really being as their are contenders. #13I take it you've never seen Huston Street pitch.Originally posted by Smokepadres
Anyone who thinks Street or Papelbon is a better option than Benoit right now isn't thinking clearly. Benoit has done nothing to lose the gig. Problem is, now they need a reliable 8th inning guy, which Veras has been before.Comment -

#15Bullpen has been pretty good. Does anyone watch Tigers baseball. Every one does realize Valverde doesn't pitch for the Tigers anymore right? Smyly and Benoit have been excellent thus far... All you need is a couple of guys and good starting pitching which the Tigers have most nights.Comment -

#16You don't want a lefty like Smyly who has proven himself in long relief to be strictly an 8th inning guy. And please don't underestimate the importance of a deep/reliable bullpen -- especially in the postseason. To say "all you need is a couple of guys" -- especially these days when almost no starter is allowed to throw more than 100 pitches -- is very simplistic.Originally posted by Brutus84Bullpen has been pretty good. A bullpen is huge when it comes to teams who have dreams of winning the World Series, which the Tigers do.Comment -

#20It's a what have you done for me lately kind of game and Veras has been lights out the past two months playing for a dog shit baseball team.
If anyone looks up his stats since May 31st then you will see he's been very good as of late which is most important headed into the last few months of the season.Comment -

#21What exactly do you want me to be open minded about? Street or Papelbon as a closer? They're both washed up.Originally posted by DeuceNo Coin you're a good guy but you're very hard headed with your opinions and don't have an open mind about anything.
I like the Veras deal, and like I said, I'm sure Dombo is looking at keeping Benoit at closer and sliding Veras into the 8th inning role, which is what he's more comfortable with anyway. At the moment at least, we need bullpen help -- not a closer. Benoit has earned that title.Comment -

#25Porcello has been good lately. Just look at his last 10 games. He had 2 shit games that were back to back, but other than that he's been solid. In the other 8, he's never given up more than 3 runs. In 3 of those starts he went 7 innings each and didn't allow a single run.Originally posted by detroitlionsfani really thought detroit would get a starter and move porcello to bullpen
