hey, what did you guys do back before Al Gore invented the internet how did you cap your games? what info? did you use? just newspapers and sports mags?

Do you remember when espn first started? was that a big deal for gamblers? being able to watch highlights of games everynight...

    thank you, and be safe

If you ever go to Europe at a sportsbook they have them available. I had them mailed to me every Monday morning so I can cap the games on Saturday.

Newspapers stacked up for the entire season comparing results of one team playing another vs their next opponent playing the same. Gawd, what a time consuming effort and losing all the way. Used to do all that work for a parlay card.

THe internet has also saved us a lot of money on getting SCORES, I remember having to call a 900 number to get final results! Especially on those small colleges that the sports news wouldn't even update you on.

what's a gold sheet? where did you get it? I'm assuming you had to pay different services to get stat sheets ect.

do you guys, in some ways Miss the old days, even if they were less convenient and time consuming?

wasn't sports wagering, handicapping more "pure" to you guys back then.

now you have all these 18 year old punks doing all in plays and screw offs like me that didn't pay my dues perfecting the craft or art if you will of hunting down valuable information

The Gold Sheet was the Gold Sheet. I think it's still around. When I got it, it was basically a weekly pamphlet of write-ups of football, pro and college. They had various stats and power rankings. There was also different levels of phone service you could subscribe to. Tout type stuff.

I did some research on the picks and found it to be not worth a damn. Basically coin-flip results. But it was a pretty gold color.

FWIW, these were my comments in a recent thread on the same general topic:

This topic brings back memories of the early 90's and the hundreds and hundreds of hours I used to spend at the library gathering research data - using a microfiche. Do people even know what a microfiche is any more?

                      I put in my time.

That is a negative of the "good old days." On the positive side I remember arbing - over the phone. Like I would literally phone for lines from two different books - and jot them all down in a shorthand I developed.

That may sound like a great big hassle but books weren't all locked in to each other and it was common to find arbs of, like, +110/+115. You'd get those lines and you'd want to phone in and place the bets really fast in case the lines moved - and often they would actually get even better.

                      You don't see that nowadays.

The first three weeks of baseball every year, before anyone had a solid read on the pitchers, were an insane free-for-all. You could earn your bankroll for the whole year (which, in those days, I would go on to lose pretty efficiently).
