what many fail to realize is that much of the harsh, seemingly illogical laws found in the Old Testament are only found in a couple of books, and these were written at a time when the Jews were exiled from Israel and believed God was punishing them, so they wrote harsher laws. Also, If you look closely at the Judaic tradition, many things aren't original, and MUCH of it was taken from pagan cultures in the area. many of the Older Testament characters were polytheistic themselves. Many ridiculous 'laws' were passed along to the Jews and were not in fact God's word.
