Does not compare to the greats. He's the most successful NASCAR driver right now but this is not some all-time great run here.

This is nothing close to what Woods and Federer did in their primes.

I'd say he's right up there with Michael Jordan! Jordan has got 6 rings, Jimmy has 5 Nascar Championships and is right at the top of the standings for a 6th! Greatest basketball player of all time, and the greatest Nascar Champion of all time! Not too many athletes can say they won 6 of anything, except Michael Phelps the 22 gold medal winner of multiple Olympics, that dude is in a category all his own!

Yeah have to agree, Terry Bradshaw and the Pittsburgh Steelers won 4 super bowl rings with Chuck Noll! Nobody has topped that in the NFL!Pretty wild that there was a Jimmy Johnson winning coach and a Jimmy Johnson champion driver! I guess if your name is Jimmy Johnson, you're destined for greatness!

Dominance of their sport in terms of number of championships, I would say Jimmie Johnson (5) is comparable to Richard Petty (7) and Dale Earnhardt (7).

                          Jeff Gordon (4)

hes closer to him, than he is them

JJ did something The King and Sr. never did, win 5 in a row. R. Petty and Earnhardt both won 4 in 5 years. Up until JJ, only Cale Yarborough had won 3 straight. Gordon definitely in the coversation. however, i don't think Johnson is done winning championships. Gordon on the other hand...

Granted if there was no Chase, then Gordon would have 2 more (6) and JJ would have 3 less (2). so I see your point WVGambler.

Winning 5 in a row with the same team doesn't rate as highly as winning 5 over a period with different cars and people . One of the reasons Schumacher's 7 F1 titles does not give him automatic #1 spot in best of all time lists.

I agree he's competing with Gordon, and guys like Pearson, on the next best level of champions after Earnhardt and The King.
                                  .
