Unless they quickly can find a trading partner, the Dodgers are expected to release outfielder Andruw Jones today. MLB.com reports L.A. had trade discussions about Jones with two teams earlier this week, but couldn't finalize a deal.
Jones is signed through the 2009 season, but he agreed to defer $21.1 million of his remaining salary if the team would trade or release him by January 15. Barring a trade, Jones soon will become a free agent. In the first season of a two-year deal with Los Angeles, Jones hit .158 with three homers and 14 RBIs in 75 games in 2008. He battled a knee injury and butted heads with the team about his conditioning (or lack thereof).

Someone noted in that Bobby Cox thread about how the Braves have shown an uncanny knack for releasing or trading players at the right time, and Andruw Jones certainly adds to that.
