Have you got any empirical evidence to back up your claims or are these merely the ramblings of a degenerate gambler?

Can you post the details of the data? It's always good to see where the data comes from when you post something as fact.

I understand New York being #2, thought they would be #1. I am with the understanding that no matter how many times you get busted for bookmaking the fine is always $500. What bookmaker wouldn't take a hit now and then for $500, almost like a gambling license.

Texas is also a non-union bookie state(except for BiG D). NY and Cal have bigger bookies because you just cant go into one of those places and setup your booking operation. That's a good way to find out first hand where Jimmy Hoffa is buried. .

Go figure. Texas has 46 (out of 254) counties that are entirely dry, and another 59 that don't have liquor-by-the-drink availability. Yet the state leads the nation in bookies I remember back in the 60s out in Real County, you couldn't buy a beer anywhere but you could watch quarter horses run with plenty of action behind the General Store in the megatropolis of Montell, population 9 at the time.

Your underestimating Texas and the volume of sports betting it has.

Not underestimating a thing, JJ. Been in this state for a long time now. Just pointing out some of the little strange things that take place in what people generally refer to as a Fire & Brimstone, Praise the Lord Bible Belt state. Always thought it a bit strange that you had to drive 100 miles to get a drink in some places but you could go around 25 miles north of Uvalde and wager on ponies or walk into a wide open card game along the seawall in Galveston.
