OT: Question for those of you who download movies
From torrents. I download them and always get a .avi file. I then use the software "DVD Flick" to burn it to a DVD-RW disk. However the quality is always that of an old 80's VHS tape that you would play in a VCR. Why is this? Any tips you guys can give me?

If you are downloading movies that are currently in theaters, then that is about the best you are going to get, they usually have the word "cam" in the title.

If you are downloading a movie that is already on DVD, then it is possible to get the DVD version, and will say "dvdrip" in the title.

cam rip = not worth watchin
ts = depends , look at the sample and determine if it'S good enough
        r5/dvdscreener/dvdrip = top quality

Yes element I am downloading the DVD versions, and I always get the dvdrip. I am not downloading movies currently in theatres. I don't understand why the quality is so bad, like I said I always get the DVDrip. How much does Nero cost?

nero is generally free, usually comes installed on alot of PC's. you can find a shitload of software and movies and music in the forums over at drunkenstepfather dot com.

i don't like torrents , i always try and find rapidshare or megashare files.

i know what you guys mean about the cam movies that someone shot inside the theater. my sisters boyfriend got a copy of the Batman movie as soon as it was in the theater and i tried to watch it and couldn't see hardly anything it was so dark.

The files you download are usually ~700 MB in size. The size of the movie files on DVD varies but the newer DVDs have 7-8 GB worth of files on them. As you can see, that is x10 in size. The files you get are compressed with some quality loss. Generally, the torrents are for people who want stuff faster and cheaper and can deal with a loss of picture quality.

I highly recommend watching HD content on a good TV. You can obtain HD content from cable, dish or Netflix. There are other more comlicated ways involving home-theater computer but that is something you are not ready yet to deal with.

Thanks Data. So everyone downloading these torrents is getting bad picture quality. Why am I the only one noticing it then? I have a high definition TV and HD signal from my cable provider and it is unreal quality. Then a step down is the DVD's I rent from Blockbuster. Then a big step down from Blockbuster DVD's are the torrents I download.

When BlueRay becomes more readily available from the video store I'm just going to buy a BlueRay player and stick to all HD. The way I heard people talk about it though the torrents were already in high definition. It just seems like I am the only one who gets this big step down in quality through the torrents.

                  Thanks for the info though.

Is there anyone else who gets worse picture quality on torrents than you do on DVD's you buy or rent?

Those 700mb dvdrips should look about the same as a DVD - you'll see a few motion artifacts here and there, but the quality is generally excellent... I'd say 80-85% that of an actual DVD.

I don't know anything about the software you're using to convert the files - instead, I would suggest that you get a cheapo DivX/xvid-compatible DVD player, which will read the AVI's natively. I got a $50 LG one 3-4 years ago and it's still going strong.

You can get full dvd movies on torrents you just have to look in the right spots (private trackers, etc.) and you have to be willing to put in a long time in downloading them unless you have very fast internet... Personally I just signed up for netflix because I decided the time and risk wasn't worth the hassle to watch movies for free ...
