His demeanor may be something a lot of people just aren't accustomed to but it's because he tries to not be biased when analyzing sports and situations. Most people (like 95% - especially in the NY area) tend to not analyze sports or opinionate without some sort of bias. Francessa recognizes this and thus looks at discussing sports in a way that is different from the common man and the common man's passions. That's all.

He's not trying to be pompous on purpose. I tend to agree with a lot of what he says on most sports and figure heads in sports. He just approaches it from a less emotional more factual, objective standpoint for the most part and is more prudent than you're average fan.
