Doug Thomas Evans
Doug Evans had heard it most of his life playing hockey. He was too small. At every level, Evans proved his critics wrong, but the NHL scouts were singing the same tune. He was not drafted, despite having placed three successful seasons with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL. In two of his three years he averaged better than a point per game, and had 86 points in just 65 games in 1982-83. Realizing he needed a year with numbers that would catch the eye of the scouts, Evans decided his best chance would be to return to the Petes for a fourth year as an overage player. In his fourth year with the club, Evans scored 45 goals and 79 assists in 61 games.
That final season drew the attention of several NHL clubs, including the St. Louis Blues, who signed him to a contract. Evans played two years with the Blues' farm team in Peoria where he was exceptionally strong. In the 1984-85 season with the Rivermen he had 36 goals and 61 assists for 97 points while racking up a rather feisty 189 minutes in penalties. He followed that up with an even better showing in 1985-86 with 46 goals and 51 assists for another 97-point season. However, he accomplished the 97 points in 12 fewer games than the previous year. Evans was called up for duty with the Blues for 13 games, scoring once. Evans would remain in the Blues' organization another four years, dividing his time between the Blues and the Rivermen. Late in the 1989-90 season the Blues dealt him to the Winnipeg Jets. It was as a member of the Jets that he played in 70 games in 1990-91, the most of any one single season in his career. He had seven goals and 34 points that year. Evans made one final NHL stop in Philadelphia, playing with the Flyers in 1992-93, scoring eight goals and 21 points in 70 games. That would mark the end of his NHL playing days, but Evans continued on his long-time association with the Peoria Rivermen, playing another six years with the club.
