    ...I'd name my son...

    Mudcat!

Awesome posting handle, and this guy never fails to impress me whenever he appears in a thread. He's open-minded, thought-provoking, liberal, accomplished, a musician, and he likes cats!

Then, if I were to pick Godparents for my little Mudcat from among the SBR-izens...I'd pick:

    Teela & Chi_Archie

These two strike me as really having the entire skill-set necessary to be parents. Certainly they each have illustrated to me innate qualities, both in their thoughts and actions, that I would like to inculcate before I ever attempted being a parent myself. They're circumspect, forward-thinking, have no problems explaining things until the listener understands, and both have very kind and accommodating dispositions. If something were to happen to me, I would trust either of them with the welfare of my progeny.

I really don't plan on having kids, but I thought this might make a fun thread for a long Saturday of NFL playoffs and college hoops conference play. Have a great day everyone!

Thanks RS, I appreciate the kind words.....

I have many "adopted" kids here in the hood, and they certainly have been both a joy and limit-testers over the years... when I met the core group of these kids in my neighborhood they ranged in ages from 3-10 or so, now I have a whole bunch of teenagers and 3 High Schoolers that know everything.... its a challenge, but the fact that out of my original group of 26 kids, that started coming over to my center for homework ect. almost 5 years later 21 of them are still coming strong. none of been arrested, none of have gotten pregnant, none of dropped out of school, none have been shot... the odds of 21 kids here, having those results in this neighborhood is worse then pittsburgh and Balty both giving up 41 points each this weekend.

so you can thank these kids for teaching me my patience...

I must say, I do like Mudcat as a posting handle. In my previous forum life at Covers I was Uncle-Mudcat (because Mudcat was taken). I didn't like it much.

Fortunately when I came here I believe I was the 4th or 5th person to sign up so there was not much danger of Mudcat being taken.

Mudcat is the name of my cat. It is all wrong for her. It would be a good name for a swaggering tomcat with enormous bollocks but my Muddy is very dainty and lady-like and clean and shiny.

There is a story to how she ended up with the name but I doubt anyone cares much. Bottom line: it's my ex's fault (although her intentions were unquestionably good).

I also happen to be pretty happy with my actual name. Thanks mom and dad!

Anyway, I'm glad I opened this thread because the kind words are quite a pick-me-up. Thanks RS.

Just placing credit where credit is due, my friend.

If you happen to want to share the genesis of Mudcat's name, I'd certainly be interested. I'm an incurable cat-lover, although I (probably unsurprisingly) gravitate towards boy-cats. My one girl cat, Queen Gracie, does a spectacular job at making my life hell, but I love her anyway. I'm quite anxious for spring to arrive so I can follow through on my intentions of getting them a pot-bellied pig friend for company.

Hope you have a great weekend, Mudcat, I meant everything I said.

Ever heard of surrogacy? There are millions of women out there just waiting for the opportunity to have a gay man's child. At least then they're assured that the child will be raised in a home free of the influences of bigots and haters like you, HedgeHog.

                                          It goes like this:

For a lot of my life I have written songs. One that I wrote and recorded in the late 80's was called Mudcar - about the beat-up old wreck of a car I drove at one time.

Flash forward to the early 90's. I've gotten clean/sober and I'm living with a woman. I've gotten serious and organized about the song-writing and have started a business. It also so happens that I have personalized MUDCAR licence plates on my car. It was not the original Mudcar - but it was just something I did. Fair to say, it was part of my identity at the time.

This chick and I decide to get a kitten - who of course needed a name. So we're talking it over and I say "Hey, we could call her Mudcat! Then we'll have Mudcar and Mudcat! A whole crazy Mud theme going on!"

The thing was, I was kidding. But she thought it was a great idea. In fact she wouldn't listen to another name.

And now there is a beautiful, graceful, very feminine little cat named Mudcat.

That's a pretty cool story, Mudcat. Honestly I did expect it to have to deal with mud a little more, but as a country boy who's bought plenty of $50 "beater cars" just to drive in the woods as abusively as possible, I think "Mudcar" is a pretty cool moniker. Thanks for sharing how it all started, I think it improves our community when we take an interest in our fellow's posters lives and histories, what brought them here and what keeps them here.

I'm proud to have you as a friend here, and honored by the fact that I know a little about you now. If you're ever in Northern California, make sure you let me know and I'll buy you dinner and maybe I can be your "Mudfriend."

And Pavy is already jealous of my attention not being on him. I told you guys that he was crushed when I said I wasn't interested in him. What more proof do you need that Pavy's in the closet?

Aww, Teela, don't sweat it. I do think you'd make an awesome Godmother though. I have a Goddaughter and I think this is about the best job in the world. I'm like another grandparent to her without having to be old to experience it. And her parents never get on my case for spoiling her because I think they're afraid that I might "resign." Isn't Catholicism grand?

I'm sure Mudcat would say that he's happy to be the canvas upon which you can paint your homophobia for all of SBR to see. Keep it up Pavy, each day a new SBR-izen realizes that your vehement bigotry is just a cover for your self-loathing on the basis of your uncontrollable gay urges. If you ever decide to come out of the closet, I'll be there for you. It'll put Ms. Transsexual South Dakota at ease too, don't you think?

You show a lot of courage on this forum with your openness.

Intellectually, let's face it, you are usually facing off against guys whose level of sophistication peaks at: name-calling. They are not hard to out-smart. Just call them fatso and you're breaking even.

It is not exactly like challenging Kasparov at chess.

Wow, that was about the best compliment I've received in a long time. Thanks, Mudcat. Isn't it interesting that a single heartfelt statement of appreciation can feel a hundred times more uplifting than an entire week's worth of insults and derision bringing me down. Chalk one up for the undeniable power of the positive over the negative.

I had the good fortune to grow up in the small village I live in now, on a road with just 10 families that functioned as a subset of the village, where we'd all look after each other's animals and crops without a second thought. All those experiences taught me how valuable community is and that the spirit of community is imparted by the vulnerability of being totally honest with your neighbors.

Now, as an openly bisexual man who's had a couple boyfriends in a row, I don't necessarily experience the same welcome that I used to in my hometown. I've bought a home and made a life for myself here, and for ill or for nil, I have to make the best of it. Enter SBR, where I decided to give free license to my repressed desires to be part of a community again.

I'm just trying to be true to the values I learned as a kid with my honesty here. I wanted to make real friendships here, and so far I've been blessed with far more than I ever expected. If the price of those friendships is some negative attention from some of the less enlightened members of the community, I'm completely willing to pay it.

SBR is important to me, and because I respect it as a community, people will always be able to hang their hat on what I tell them here. I hope that by my attitude I can inspire others here to evaluate just how much SBR adds to their lives, and if I can do that, then I will have been paid back ten-fold for all the abuse I've taken so far.

Thanks for the kind words Mudcat, and the preamble to this message which I've been wanting to post on SBR for awhile. You're one of a kind, in the very best sense of the term.
