I admit it, I have a soft spot for drunks and bums.....John Daly is an idol of mine and I am not sure why....any guy that can win $1.2 million at 7pm on a Sunday night and be broke playing $5000 slots before 2am is pretty cool in my book.
When I was younger the biggest drunk I knew of was former Buffalo Sabre and Winnipeg Jet Phil Housley. I used to work at a bar in Winnipeg called Norma Jean's and we would pour Phil into a cab or some chicks car 100 nights a year.....I wonder how good that guy could have been if he wasn't such a booze hound.
I also remember that the guy he got traded for, Dale Hawerchuk, could put them back. one time, out in Gimli Manitoba I was playing golf behind one group...they were exceptionally slow but were all good players. The problem was that all of them chain smoked and drank and one of them was a pot-bellied Dale. the gu must have smoked 50 cigarettes in 18 holes.
Teemu Selanne was awesome too...spent a night hanging out with him (at a club called Wise Guys) when I was 22 (he was 24) when he had his achilles injury. The guy's English sucked at the time, but can you imagine him with 30 drinks in him? I poured him and one of the hottest chicks I have ever seem into a cab that night (don't tell his wife).
The biggest drunk I ever saw though was Fedor Fedorov, a former Canucks draft pick and a Manitoba Moose player for 3 years. He was involved in something that the media called 'The Incident' and was suspended for 9 games while the team tried to trade him....turned out there were no takers. In 'The Incident' we were out with him until he passed out at 5am.....we then hopped in his H2 (Sergei used to send him $5k per week) and dumped him in the hallway of the arena for his coaches to find him after practice. Damn he was a fun guy to party with.
Anyway...I have about 2 million more stories.....hopefully other's have a few to add!!!!!!!!!!! Tell me the bighgest drunks in sports!!
