has anyone done any officiating in games?
    Little League/High School/College?

I've done a few seasons umpiring high school baseball. Haven't had time to do any games this last year due to working 2nd shift, and not having any time on the weekends. It was a ton of fun though. Good way to get out and enjoy some sports up close and personal while making a little cash on the side. Best way to make guaranteed money on sports

Thought I might give some of you guys an idea for some fun side money. Especially those of you in college.

let me know if you want to get into high school ball, theres a really good organization that does pretty much every school in the metroplex. from weatherford to dallas, denton to granbury, and everywhere in between. it does take alot of time though, and lots of driving. the money is good though, you could make a couple of hundred dollars in a day at an all day tourney.

I umped when I was a teenager in baseball. Just umped one game this last summer in a traveling team playoff game. It was hella hot and I had been drinking the night before. 2.5 hours in hot weather, calling balls and strikes for $25 was really not my cup of tea..lol. I will leave the umping to the youngsters

I know a lil off topic but when I was 13 I did some umpiring for Minors.(7-9 year olds) This is when they are first allowed to pitch to each other. I think I got 25 a game behind the plate 20 in the field.

Well to make a long story short I was umpiring a game that had two of Steve Saxs kids in the game. For anyone who may remember or know who he had a hot temper. Well me only being 13 at the time wasnt aware of this and my dad was watching the game as well(to drive me to my game to play after I was done there) and I rung up his 7 year old kid on what I recall an ify pitch! Well lets say after that event was all said and done Mr Sax was banned from Coaching in the league and I never went through so much shit at 13 lol! Good times looking back on it now.

i was an 8 yr man as an umpire.. umping is the toughest thing to do. we are all under paid.. 20 bucks for 2 hrs with 40 guys that hate you and will never be happy.. no matter what call you made on the bases on a bang bang play, one team was not going to be happy and will harass you from the bench and threaten you etc... very tough job.. and not easy, too..

I umped Little League at two different times in my life. Overall great experience. They pay $25 per game here but the last two seasons, I never took a dime, just didn't feel right when I saw several others and the amount of unpaid time they put into the league. Not planning to do it this year; as much as I love being around the kids, I can't stand a lot of their parents who don't volunteer one goddamn minute of their time and feel they can call a better game sitting 50 feet away, cocked at an angle and with a fence between them and the action. It was usually easy enough to shut them up. Just walk over in between innings, pull out my scorecard and pen and ask them for their name and phone number. When they asked why, I would say, "Because as good a game as you're calling from the stands, I want to make sure and get you qualified next season to do it on the field."

There should be a building for parents to go sit and watch the games on some sort of closed-circuit setup. They could even sell drinks/cocktails, would be a helluva' way to have an in-season fundraiser.

a buddy and i discussed something very similar to this after umpiring a rivalry game. players and coaches can be rough, but parents are the ****ing worst.

everybody's kid is an all-star, and going to the majors

I umped a total of about eight years along the way, and am very proud that I never ejected anyone. A couple of times, a kid would do something that warranted an ejection according to the rules -- throwing their helmet, their bat, cursing. But the rules also would have meant they had to sit out the next game, didn't seem fair, kids are supposed to play first and foremost. So all I had to do was go over and ask the manager nicely to put a sub in for the kid and talk to them instead of causing a big scene.

And the majority of the coaches were good guys who put in a lot of time, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt as well. As umpire-in-chief, I would hold two meetings (one before, one during the season) with all coaches and umpires present to air things out. Seemed to work as umpires could get constructive criticism in a controlled atmosphere, and coaches understood that we were willing to leanr and get better.

i never ejected anyone either, threatened a few coaches with it if it got bad...but that usually shut them up for the game.

in texas, if a high school coach is ejected from a game, they have to go down to austin to appear before the review board. it seems none of them ever wanted to do that.

in one game, one of my partners ejected a parent for telling him that he was "going to meet him out in the parking lot and kick his ass after the game was over." after the game, we were at our vehicles changing out of our gear, and the ejected parent walked up to my partner. this other umpire was a long time buddy of mine, and a big ol' country boy. he took his chest protector off, removed his glasses, and said "alright buddy, you wanna do this, lets go." the parent then said that his wife had told him to come over and apologize to us for being an asshole.

I officiated men's flag football leagues for many years. I ending up owning the league and made a lot of money. After officiating and owning the league, I have seen about every dark side of what competition can do to grown men.

There is not a name I have not been called. I have been threatened to be beat up and shot.

Officiating flag football or any type of football is really complicated. There are so many rules in football. I knew every rule inside and out.

My officials usually burned out after a year. It's not for everyone.

umped Little League for a year or so in High School....

I remember an irate dad when his kid got called out stretching a double into a triple....

he was screaming obscenities for a good 30 seconds top of his voice, followed by a 100 foot bat toss.
