    do traps exist in betting?
does Vegas and line makers in general... really create sucker bets for big public games? what is the criteria for a game to be a good one for Vegas to post a trap line?

Would all sucker bets show at least some RLM?

    I'd just be repeating myself.

But I do believe they exist for sure. I think the criteria is simply when Vegas sees a situation where the team that they KNOW the public is going to love is the "wrong side", they can get people to fall in love with the "wrong side" at a short price.

Doesn't have to be RLM, as I'd say NO line movement would constitute a sucker play as well if all action is on one side.

    What do you think?

It works both ways. Today there is at least one bet that I know the books don't want to offer. But they have to. Books don't have a whole lot of room to move lines for halves and quarters, and sometimes such lines are so obviously wrong that they can leave a book very vulnerable (so they use limits or shaded lines).

A book like Pinnacle will often take a position, and if you study the Pinny lean you should be able to find the correct way of implementing it.

Books have to offer so many bets that sucker bets are their problem, much more so than the gambler's problem. Yesterday, right before the faceoff of the Winter Classic in the NHL (played outdoors) the commentators explained that there was a strong wind -with snow flurries- blowing directly in the face of one of the goalies. One of the goalies would have trouble seeing and yet the total was offered at 5.5 goals! The books had the sucker bet.

My question based of this do books, have to keep/put a line up if they know they dont want to offer it? I guess are they obligated to put it up if every other book does?

Traps don't exist. There is no "wrong side" because the opinions of certain people do not influence the outcome of sporting events.

no but vegas can put out a soft line...knowing that most squares and joe 6 pack public gamblers will be all over the "likely" wrong side

yes of course they exist. i've witnessed quite a few. sometimes books will have info that not too many know, like the starting QB has a 103 temperature, or is down and depressed cause his GF left him and they know that no way that line will be -11 like it should be.... so they make it -6.5 knowing the world will be on the fav.. and the -6.5 fav lose by 10..

this happens alot... in every sport.. they are ahead of the game.

Just look at the NE game last week.. opened at 43, closed at 33.5 at some books. game ends 13-0.. they are always ahead.. people probably saw 33.5 and said.. wow..... easy over. books knew wind was gusting in every direction and that even a FG would be hard to get..

watch out for the trap lines.

No such thing as a trap. you predict the outcome of the game. you're either right or you're wrong simple as that.

That would have been a trap game for the books. Bad weather and December go hand in hand. Sharps played the under early, and then could come back with the over before kickoff. This middle didn't hit, but a 10 pt shot is not exactly what the books have in mind when they hang a line.

Not suggesting that middling is the way to go when the line moves your way. For December weather it may be.
