Have You Ever Been in Vegas on New Year's Eve?
Don't mean if you live there, that doesn't count.

    As a vistor.

The 5 days after Christmas there are cheapo city, usually. Hotels almost giving their rooms away. A good part of December like that, usually. And maybe more so this year with the recession/depression.

But NY Eves the masses descend. The booze flow, the machines whirl and ring and twinkle and hum. The room rates rise like Lazerus from the grave.

I was there maybe three times on NY eve. Once didn't count, as a kid I lived there around a year.

(I recalll applying for a job at one place, I forgot which. A pit boss whom I was sent to for the application said: "What's your parole officer think of your being here?" As the guy himself looked like a gofer in an old gangster movie, I replied: "What does yours think?" No job, of course.)

A second time, still more or less a kid, I drove up from L.A. with a few friends. I don't remmember why, or much about it.

Last time was a few years ago. A fiend of the gf had a boy friend who owned a timeshare place there, and he wanted to go up to watch the old Westward Ho get imploded, at the stroke of midnight on NY Eve.

He drove his car out, I and the gf bought dinner, around 9 PM we park maybe five blocks from the implosion site and mill around like a bunch of cockroaches for 3 hours.

It was nice to see the explosions go off, and the building come down on cue. Beat the dumb Times Square ball dropping off the Tmes Tower, or whereever it drops from.

But not worth hanging in a senseless crowd for hours.

Vegas holds less and less interest for me as the grey grows on the beard. It changes, but is in fundamentals still the same old same old as it was when I saw it first as a wide-eyed kid (not that wide-eyed, I'm from the NYC area.)

As one (Jewish) friend of mine said some years ago: "A Jew's idea of Paradise." (Vegas now is no longerf owned by the Mafia - unless there is such a thing as a Jewish Mafia.)

Been about 4-5 times, mostly when I was a little younger. It is fun but now a days I don't feel like dealing with the crowds.

I'm wondering with the hard economic times if Vegas tonite will see a drop in biz.

People tho do gamble in good times and bad. But may take less on ventures to places like LV

But if you're there now have a lights-out evening

Let us know how it goes, room rates, crowds compared to last year.

I'm about to ask SBR John or Ragewizard if LV casino stocks are a good play for 2009
