What are your plans for New Year’s Eve? Maybe you will be throwing a big party with friends and family, or perhaps venturing out to revel in the moment with total strangers. Me? I won’t be doing much of anything. I’ll probably pick up a 12-pack of something European and Mrs. Bread and I will be watching some movies. The highlight will be ‘Surfer, Dude’, which arrived from my movie queue just today. Any film that gives Matthew Macaunaghey a green light to embrace his spacey stoner persona is A-OK with me.
No parties, no dropping of the ball for me. Is Dick Clark even still alive? I have no clue. It’s like just the other day I found out that Telly Savalas has been dead for 15 years! Next you’ll probably tell me that Charlie Bronson has passed also. But that’s just silly. Nothing can kill Charlie Bronson. I guess that Ryan Seacrest is the new ball dropping ringleader now. The irony in that statement alone is reason enough to pass on New Year’s celebrations.

Dick Clark would be rolling in his grave is he saw this

Thank you Mario Chalmers

I’ll also be taking the day off from the games. I will be back strong in 2009. I have a New Year’s resolution and that is to stop picking losers/stop chasing/help O.J. find the real killers. They are all rolled into one because they are all impossible. I like to set unattainable resolutions for myself. When I was 15 I resolved that I would date Elle MacPherson. Of course, that’s back when people actually read Sports Illustrated. I’ll admit, I got it for the pictures, not the articles.
There are five great bowl games on tomorrow. I’ll look them over in a minute. I don’t know, maybe I’ll do a little something on them. You know…just to keep my attention. First, a quick recap of my biggest win and my biggest lost of 2008. These were ranked on both monetary consequence, and levels of jubilation/heartbreak involved. First, the biggest loss.
Week 5 in the NFL, and the dreaded Indianapolis Colts were three point favorites in Houston. Sucker bet all the way. I was all over the Texans. Not my biggest bet of the year, but still pretty substantial. What makes this my worst loss of the year, was the way it happened. Down by 17 with less than five minutes remaining, Houston QB Sage Rosenfels, had a meltdown for the ages. I don’t even remember what he did, I’ve blacked it out. I think it involved some fumbles or something. Long story short, the Colts did not only win, but also covered as the Texans lost by four. I may or may not have thrown something. I don’t remember. The fact that SBR moderator CrazyLou was on the unlikely winning end of this one made it even worse. I still haven’t recovered from that one.
My best win of the year sits atop the list, in part, because I didn’t have to stress it out. The NCAA basketball championship featured Kansas and Memphis. I had a feeling on the Jayhawks. Memphis was favored by two. I was so confident, that I laid down a decent wager on Kansas to win by five or more, which would’ve more than tripled my original amount. With about 2:30 left in the game and Kansas down by 11, I turned off the TV and went to bed. I made peace with the loss as I slept the night away, so you can imagine my confusion when I turned on my computer in the morning and found out that they somehow tied the game at the buzzer, and then won by seven in overtime! I was disappointed for a moment that I didn’t remain awake to enjoy this victory, but to be honest, it would’ve been too stressful. A nice payday + no stress = best win of the year.

OK, talking about that win convinced me. I have to do a little something on these bowl games. I’m not sure exactly who I’ll be taking yet, but here is a quick look at the five matchups.
12 pm Armed Forces Bowl
Houston -4 64 Air Force
We can’t have Air Force losing in the Armed Forces Bowl, can we??
2 pm Sun Bowl
Oregon State -2.5 52 Pittsburgh
Never underestimate the ineptitude of Pitt coach Dave Wannstedt. Never.

No, thank you

3:30 pm Music City Bowl
Boston College 3.5 41 Vanderbilt
A 41 point O/U? Is this the ’01 Ravens vs. Clearwater High? I’ll take the Over, thanks.
6 pm Insight Bowl
Kansas 9.5 58 Minnesota
Kansas basketball was a part of my biggest win of the year. It just seems right to take them here, doesn’t it?
7:30 pm Chick-fil-A Bowl
Georgia Tech -4 52.5 LSU
The Chick-fil-A Bowl would never work in Boise, ID. It’s good that this is being held in Atlanta, GA. Keep an eye out for Nick Cannon in the crowd shots.
Good fortune to everyone and Happy New Year. Please don’t include me in your mass texts at midnight. I’m not interested.
