49ers' injuries becoming costly posted: Thursday, September 29, 2005
filed under: San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders
The 49ers placed cornerback-safety Mike Rumph on the injured reserve list because of his foot problem. Before Saturday, they will probably bring cornerbacks Bruce Thornton or B.J. Tucker off the practice squad. That would be the third move of the week after adding cornerback Willie Middlebrooks and wide receiver Jason McAddley. Because those moves were off three players who went on injured reserve, the moves ate up about $1 million of cap room to find replacement.
Meanwhile, the injury problems continue for the 49ers. Center Jeremy Newberry (knee) and wide receiver Arnez Battle (knee) missed their second consecutive day of practice and were downgraded from probable to questionable. They join left tackle Jonas Jennings (shoulder) and linebacker Julian Peterson (hamstring) on the injury list as questionable. Neither practiced Wednesday and Thursday. The team is still hoping all four will be able to play against the Cardinals on Sunday in Mexico.
Winborn attracting interest: Mike Nolan said four teams contacted him about linebacker Jamie Winborn, who was told to leave the team until they trade him. The 49ers decided to go with Andre Carter as their starting outside linebacker. Winborn didn't like the idea of being a backup on a 3-4, and the 49ers don't want to have a backup linebacker making $1.775 million.
Vikings banged up: Vikings strong safety Darren Sharper (knee) and halfback Moe Williams (knee) will be game-time decisions. Sharper is questionable, but says he is going to try to play. Williams is probable and the team needs him as a backup halfback because he's the best pass protector among the running backs. Defensive end Lance Johnstone (shoulder) said he won't be able to play and is already doubtful. Defensive end Kenechi Udeze (knee) was downgraded from questionable to doubtful after missing Thursday's practice. Mike Tice is expected to start Darrion Scott and Spencer Johnson at defensive end with Erasmus James coming off the bench as a third-down pass rusher.
Horn nursing sore hammy: Saints wide receiver Joe Horn didn't practice Thursday, missing his second consecutive day because of a hamstring injury. Horn is one of the league's most durable wide receiver and still should be able to play if he practices Friday.
Bruce likely to sit for Rams: The Rams are probably going to be without wide receiver Isaac Bruce, who is doubtful with a turf toe and hasn't been able to do anything in practice this week. Kevin Curtis will start for him. The Rams will have Steven Jackson starting in the backfield. He has sore ribs and missed Wednesday's practice, but returned Thursday.
Jordan limited in practice: Raiders halfback Lamont Jordan only took part in about a handful of snaps Thursday because of a minor calf injury. The Raiders expect him to start.
