I find it amazing people get so worked up about big moneylines in a free "best bet" thread.
Unreal.

I see their point Big T. The best bet thread is the true gauge of a handicapper. Anybody who says they do better picking 3-5 games than they do one isnt much of a capper and probably bets alot of heavy chalk.

yup, its not bad. Parlays can be your friends if your betting enough money per game ...lets you get more money down without the book easily tracking it

Someone can be a great handicapper picking a few games a day. Anything can happen in that best bet. The best bet has just as much chance of hitting as a worst bet.
And Richkas, not to stir the pot, but i've seen you take multiple heavy chalked lines in the past...and your on the top of the list.

I don't understand why so many people are opposed to the rule change. The Team Handicapping Contest fell apart because of a lack of structure. How is setting an extremely minor framework for the Best Bet thread wrong? I understand that there are two major philosophical camps in play, one believing that it's all for fun and the other believing that the thread serves a metrological purpose in allowing us to gauge handicapping ability. Can't we come to some sort of consensus that will prevent us from fracturing into two different threads?
I still have yet to read a quality argument against setting limits for ML plays. From what I see, some people just don't want rules placed on the thread out of principle. I'd like to understand the underpinnings of that argument better before I attempt to suggest a compromise. Would anyone in the "nay" camp care to further expand their reasoning?

I know I have. I did it to break losing streaks. I'm wanting to change the rules and zero out the standings to prove to all who the best is because I got up to first during baseball, I dont need the big M/L to win it.

restricting the prices a pick can be is lame
those that are just picking high chalk everyday will eventually hit a landmine, and its not like it matters people can see their picks and can see they are picking chalk
if i see i side that i think has 95% of winning and the price is only -500, thats a good bet! considering a 95% winner should be ~-2000.

All I want is some "realism" in the bestbet thread. If your not even going to make the bet in "real life" how can it be your best bet of the day?
I didn't speak up for a long time, because I figured it would stop..... But it didn't......
I apologize if I came across like an ass or anything.....I was kind of making a joke about it....Because it is just ridiculous to me to continually see picks like -16500.......Who is going to lay that kind of cash to win 100 bucks....NO ONE.
I personally am not a fan of a 300 ml limit either though because I do enjoy (in real life) taking ml dogs of say....500, 700, etc.... I have hit them many times.
Recently I took Buffalo on the ml +550 I think in College Football over Ball St and won for example.
Yesterday I took 5 ML dogs in College Basketball and hit 3 of them.... Generally they are under +300 though.......
Idk...... I agree with Rogue Scholar though......we should be able to come to some sort of agreement that's fair....Because I do sometimes like to tail people that do well in best bets....And I'm sure I'm not alone.

When MadCapper started it Best Bet was meant to be everyones best bet that can actually be wagered by the $10 or $1000 bettor that participates in this forum. How is the $10 bettor going to be benefited by the SBR Best Bet thread after seeing -16500 favs being bet on ML?

grade anything over -200 as risking 1 unit instead of to win 1 unit.

I suppose that's one solution to the problem, to address the method of grading as opposed to the picks themselves. That essentially functions as a -1000 ML cap, though, so I see it as just another version of the rule that we have all been debating.
It seems to me that the most fundamental issue at hand is the realism of actually making these wagers. When you see people making these pure chalk bets in the thread, it removes credibility from the whole process, not just the capper making them. I do tail some people from the Best Bet thread, but I'm certainly not paying any attention to the majority of posts in there.
We should be cognizant of the fact that all of the participants would benefit from contributing to a bona fide "measuring tape" of handicapping ability. In my opinion, if you want to have fun, join an SBR contest, this thread should stand for a longer-term, more concrete achievement in our community.

I hate the best bet thread, for instance I have 20 plays on the board today. (11 college hoops and 9 NFL). I usually don't bet much on the NFL but I liked the card this week. Impossible to pick just 1 play
