          What did you expect exactly???

He played 1 year in college. Hurt the whole year. Played most of the year with one hand.

He didn't play at all his rookie year because of his knee injury/surgery.

He's about half a season into his professional career when he should be a redshirt sophomore in college.

Big men develop more slowly than point guards. And it's still not at all clear that he's not going to be this generation's Sam Bowie.

So, while it's not surprising that Greg Oden hasn't developed into the next coming of Bill Russell; what's surprising is that you seemed surprised that he hasn't...

Like I said JJ, the kids played one half of an NBA season when he should be a RS sophomore in college...But here's a list of the all time worst NBA draft picks to argue over...

                10) Joe Smith – 1st Overall Selection by the Golden State Warriors in 1995

Selected ahead of: Rasheed Wallace (#4), Kevin Garnett (#5), Michael Finley (#21)

Although he is still an NBA starter, Smith never lived up to expectation and has been outplayed by many others in his NBA draft class, most notably Kevin Garnett. He was a very good player in college and has been a decent player in the NBA, but a huge disappointment for many Maryland fans and Warriors fans alike.

                9) Pervis Ellison – 1st Overall Selection by the Sacramento Kings in 1989

Selected ahead of: Sean Elliott (#3), Glen Rice (#4), Tim Hardaway (#14), Shawn Kemp (#17), Vlade Divac (#26)

In another notoriously weak draft, the Kings selected Ellison with the first overall selection in 1989. “Never Nervous Pervis” had two all-star calibre seasons as a member of the Washington Bullets and was traded to the Boston Celtics where he would fade into basketball obscurity. Thankfully for the Kings, this draft did not spawn any true NBA greats and is one of the most forgettable drafts in league history.

                8) Dennis Hopson – 3rd Overall Selection by the New Jersey Nets in 1987

Selected ahead of: Scottie Pippen (#5), Kenny Smith (#6), Kevin Johnson (#7), Reggie Miller (#11), Mark Jackson (#18)

The selection of this popular Buckeye went downhill for the New Jersey Nets . Hopson was drafted in a pretty deep draft and amounted to next to nothing. After a lacklustre five season NBA career as a bench player, Hopson was arrested on charges of domestic violence at age 35 after threatening to kill his wife.

                7) Chris Washburn – 3rd Overall Selection by the Golden State Warriors in 1986

Selected ahead of: Chuck Person (#4), Roy Tarpley (#7), Ron Harper (#8), Mark Price (#25), Dennis Rodman (#27)

Granted that the 1986 draft may have been the worst draft of all-time, Washburn had an absolutely horrible career that spanned three seasons and achieved a career scoring average of 3.1 points-per-game. The 2nd overall selection, Len Bias, died tragically and was slated to be one of the NBA’s brightest young talents. With Rodman’s wedding dress, Bias’s death, Tarpley’s drug addiction leading to his indefinite suspension from the NBA, the 1986 draft simply has disaster written all over it.

                6) Kent Benson – 1st Overall Selection by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1977

Selected ahead of: Bernard King (#7), Jack Sikma (#8), Norm Nixon (#22)

Benson was a hero as a Hoosier at the University of Indiana, however, his NBA career makes him one of the worst first overall selections in NBA history. Incidentally, Benson is also the last white player selected first overall. Benson lasted eleven season on the finest benches in the NBA and averaged mediocre numbers.

                5) Richard Washington – 3rd Overall Selection by the Kansas City Kings in 1976

Selected ahead of: Adrian Dantley (#6), Robert Parish (#8), Alex English (#23)

One of John Wooden’s alumni from UCLA who didn’t achieve NBA expectations, Washington had a mediocre six season career. Washington’s first two NBA seasons showed promise, as he averaged roughly 13 points-per-game and 8.5 rebounds-per-game in those seasons. After those seasons, Washington’s career derailed and did not live up to the expectations and achievements of most UCLA alumni.

                4) LaRue Martin – 1st Overall Selection by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1972

Selected ahead of: Bob McAdoo (#2), Julius Erving (#12)

A wire thin 6’11” center out of Loyola who never averaged more than 7.0 points-per-game in his four year NBA stint. A few years ago, college-biased analyst Dick Vitale claimed that Yao Ming could be the next LaRue Martin. Of course, Ming was able to outscore Martin’s highest scoring year in his first month in the NBA. During his 1970-1971 season at Loyola, Martin averaged 18.7 points-per-game and 17.6 rebounds-per-game and is Loyola’s all-time rebound leader despite only playing for three seasons.

                3) Rick Robey – 3rd Overall Selection by the Indiana Pacers in 1978

Selected ahead of: Michael Ray Richardson (#4), Larry Bird (#6), Reggie Theus (#9), Maurice Cheeks (#36), Michael Cooper (#60)

Everyone picked ahead of Larry Bird was essentially a bad pick given the promise that Bird showed in college, but Robey was the worst of the top-3 selected. Unlike Mychal Thompson and Phil Ford (the 1st and 2nd overall selections), Robey showed no promise at the NBA level. Robey averaged less than 15 points-per-game and 8 rebounds-per-game in his senior year in college, which are very low season statistics to warrant a third overall selection. The Pacers passed up Bird, a hometown favorite, in Robey’s favor. Robey was traded after his first 43 games in the NBA to the Boston Celtics , who would trade him years later for Dennis Johnson, a player who was instrumental in leading them to the playoffs year after year.

                2) Michael Olowokandi – 1st Overall Selection by the L.A. Clippers in 1998

Selected ahead of: Mike Bibby (#2), Antawn Jamison (#4), Vince Carter (#5), Dirk Nowitzki (#9), Paul Pierce (#10), Rashard Lewis (#32)

In the weeks leading up to the 1998 NBA Draft, the first overall selection was a huge question mark. Coming in from off the radar was Michael Olowokandi, who slowly eased his way into the top-5 and was shockingly selected at first overall over about nine out of ten others who have had more successful NBA careers. The Kandi Man was a bold risk selected by the Clippers who are always looking to get better, but seemingly always manage to get worse.

                1) Sam Bowie – 2nd Overall Selection by the Portland Trail Blazers in 1984

Selected ahead of: Michael Jordan (#3), Sam Perkins (#4), Charles Barkley (#5)

The worst draft selection in NBA history, hands down. Picking Sam Bowie ahead of Michael Jordan will notoriously go down in history as one of the biggest mistakes in the history of sports. The Trail Blazers GM at the time said years later that he would have still made the Bowie selection today if given the choice of players out of college. Granted they had Clyde Drexler at the time, but one can only salivate in curiosity about the combination of Jordan and Drexler. Luckily for Clyde “The Glide”, Jordan would take a breather for a few years and he’d get his championship ring with Hakeem Olajuwon (the 1st overall selection in this draft) and the Houston Rockets .

Honorable Mentions: Darko Milicic, Jon Koncak, Joe Barry Carroll, Nicoloz Tskitishvili, Kwame Brown, Marcus Fizer, Jonathan Bender, Steve Stipanovich

Oden never had an offensive game at Ohio State. He's not a franchise player either. He's just a big body out there. Portland doesn't need him to score anyways. Oden does make up for Aldridge's lack of rebounding though. I don't know if he could be any worse but the kid still has time to develop I guess.
