Since most footwear I buy are boots, then my original statement stands. As I recall the last pair of Asics I bought had the laces tied, too. Perhaps it's because I order them online, who knows.

maybe he took them out of the box to try them on, then tied the laces, walked around room to make sure they are comfortable and not too tight, then instead of untying them, he just took them off like that and put them back in box.. that's what i would do..
