Yes, you need a passport, not to enter Canada but to return to the USA.
The following pieces of identification will serve as satisfactory proof of American citizenship to enter Canada.
Please note, however, that photocopies of ID must be notarized:- US passport
OR - Birth certificate,
OR - Certificate of citizenship or naturalization,
AND - Photo ID, such as current driver's license
All U.S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport.
Alien permanent residents of the U.S. must present their Alien Registration Card, commonly called a “Green Card.”

#4Shouldn't you be asking American posters instead of Canadians? How would a Canadian passport holder know what a US passport holder needs to have to enter Canada?Comment -

#9I live near the border of Canada here in Montana. You do not need a passport to get thru the border no matter if you are coming or going. You do however need your birth certificate or ID. I have never had to show a passport ever.Comment -

This is correct, the passport rule for land crossings doesn't take effect until June 2009.
You do not yet need a passport if travelling by car to/from Canada.

You don't have "coffee crisp" in the US? Tragic.
As for the confusion, the US wants rule changes brought about as soon as possible but lobbying by border states and Canada has them constantly making changes to the dates the new rules go into effect.
I can assure you that if crossing (BEFORE JUNE 2009) via one of the bridges between New York State into Ontario by car you will not need a passport.
Make sure you have proper ID though.Comment -

Ya, the only thing you have to worry about these days is if your car is the one that is selected for the random check. They you will be searched like you have never been searched before so make sure you have a good story when you get there. Also, Top, you taking a break from posting picks, I always liked your totals. Whats up with that?Comment -

#17ha ha nice, ya, i don't know that you would want to be looking like a middle eastern crossing in/out of the US these days. That may be grounds for immediate search. But good luck, I kind of thought you were a baseball guy but just couldnt track you down lately to ask you. Good luck with the casinos.Comment -

#18Originally posted by JBC77Things have changed, I remember going to Canada many years ago and you really didn't need anything but a drivers license.
Things have changed at the border, the changes were not initiated by the Canadian government, they were initiated by the paranoid US government because of those planes that were flown into the buildings in NYC.
Canada isn't dumb, they recognize that American visitors are good for the economy and would like it to be easier to travel between the two countries, not more difficult. The Canadian government knows that if its a hassle for Yanks to visit then they probably won't bother making the trip. Governors from US border states like Michigan/New York/Washington all know how important it is to keep the border open and people moving.
If you are ever in Windsor Ontario, check out the line of trucks waiting for clearance into the States via the Ambassador bridge, its sometimes 15 miles long!
This situation was caused by the US gov, in their infinite wisdom.Comment -
