If your roll isnt that big then you're betting too large a % of your roll on each play.

I don't know about that, each unit I bet is around 2% of my roll. If the right thing to do is bet lower then there's no way I can do that and not go nuts. If I do all the bets that d2d just did then that will lock up more than 30% in MLB plays. Not something that I want to do

I'm hoping he is just waiting for his sports to come back. NFL, NBA, and his best sport NHL.

Unfortunately, I feel is he is still plugging away off-board on MLB and most likely not doing so good. But I really hope he is just enjoying the short Canadian summer and will be come back to make himself (while taking us with him) serious money when his sports, that he is so good at predicting, come back.

Here's What We Oughtta Do, Who's With Me?

                                I have a solution.

Like the others avid followers of D2D, I am unhappy to see that he is absent. Like his other fans here, I too hope he is enjoying the short Canadian summer and re-charging his batteries.

Almost certainly he is visiting this thread occasionally, and I am confident he appreciates the best wishes from the readers here.

Certainly if he returns for Hockey and Football he will be likely to be an effective handicapper over time at those sports.

In the meantime, life, and the D2D thread, must continue.

I suggest that we each contribute a gambling story, or life anecdote, or just about anything to fill the dead air until D2D returns.

Here is how I suspect this will play out: At first, we will each contribute one or two interesting stories. Most everyone who reads here has an interesting or entertaining gambling story to share, or several.

This will make good reading for all for the next week or two.

With those stories exhausted, we will each have to dig to the second tier of our gambling anecdotes. These will be less entertaining, but not horrible.

After two or three weeks of those, both our excellent and our good gambling anecdotes will be exhausted. At that point we will be reduced to our third-tier stories. These will be excruciating dull: ("There was this Saturday night football game once, UCLA vs. Oregon, and I was about even on the day, and I had the Bruins pretty small, plus a medium bet on the over...." - Are your eyes glazing over yet? Don't worry, they will be.... "So it's third and about seven at mid-field, right? And the quarterback drops back, he was pretty good but he never made it in the pros this guy, drafted fourth round and played a couple years as a back-up for the Seahawks in the late nineties...."

More? You want more? I doubt it.

At that point (five or six weeks out, I estimate), D2D will consider it his civic duty to return, to rescue his loyal readers from the excruciating dull anecdotes which will be a main - stay of the thread by then.

This will coincide, I estimate, with the 2nd or 3rd week of Exhibition Football, in August.

                                *****

Anyone else can start if they like, I will post my first entry in the next few days, it is not so much a gambling story as a recounting of a conversation between the manager of New York's Algonquin Hotel (famous for its literary Round Table) and a visiting tourist.

Probably it is more of a second-tier story then a first tier one (especially since it doesn't have a genuine gambling theme) but I think it will set the tone nicely.

Also on the plus side, if I've over-estimated the appeal of the anecdote, and actually it's closer to third tier than second tier, that will set the bar low for other entrants, and also bring back D2D that much sooner. It's a win-win-win!

                                - Old School Pro

PS: Did I tell you about the time I went to the Super-K convenience store out by where I live? It was late afternoon, early evening, and I figured I'd get gas. I didn't have to, I had about a quarter tank left anyway, but I had a long trip planned for the following day and also wanted to pick up a six-pack of Coke and maybe some Doritos and salsa, so I'm driving over there....

Third tier material that, no? At least until we construct a fourth tier....

If we all work together, we WILL flush D2D out with this tactic, believe me. He has delicate Canadian sensibilities, there are only so many tedious gambling anecdotes a guy like that can bear....

Like playing ABBA songs over and over for bound prisoners at Guantanamo, this is (or at least should be) prohibited by the Geneva Convention. It might be a little cruel, but it will be effective.

Haven't seen you around in ages. I figure D2D is holed up somewhere, conserving his bankroll until NFL or NBA starts up. Unfortunately, his MLB sucks lol. Surprised he hasn't posted any tennis picks lately though.

                                    What Happened to The Reservoir?

As some of you may know, there was a legendary literary group that met at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City.

It included a famous theater critic named Alexander Woolcott and a writer / critic named Dorothy Parker.

For years they would have lunch and drink in the afternoon. Harpo Marx sat with them whenever he was in New York, in the twenties and the thirties.

They became quite an institution at this hotel (must have, since we are still talking about them almost 100 years later).

One day a tourist came to have lunch at the hotel. He had not been there in several years. He was quite stunned to see that the writers were no longer at their usual table, no trace of them.

The manager of the room passed, so he asked them, "Where are the writers?"

"Where are the Indians?" the manager replied. "What happened to the reservoir?"

                                    *****

If you go back far enough (1600's), there were Indians roaming Manhattan Island (who do you think the Dutch bought it from?"

You don't have to go back as far (1800's) to reach the period when there was a reservoir for the city at the current site of the New York Public Library (42nd St. and 5th Avenue).

I guess the manager was trying to say, "Sometimes something is there a long time (like the Algonquin Round Table), and you assume it will be there forever, and then it isn't."

So when I see that D2D is absent, while I hope he returns, I can't help but think:

"Where are the Indians? What happened to the reservoir?"

After dumping close to two grand in his final 2 days I'd say he is hovering around the 10 G mark.
                                        Hard to say though.

                                          Where The Fukowie?

                                          Where the Fukowie?

                                          - Johnny Carson, long-time Tonight Show host, on the generally-missing Indian Tribe, The Fukowie.

Try not to count 2D2's (remaining) money, it's unseemly.

Maybe he's nursing his wounds (bankroll and romantic) at some Canadian pole-dancing establishment on the wrong side of the tracks.

Maybe he's putting a little extra effort in that day job (which none of us can understand why he wastes his time on this, since he handicaps so well, but I guess now it's easy to see why - handicaps very well, yes - so well sometimes, and not so well sometimes).

Maybe he's holed up in a basement reading scouting reports on college football, counting returning seniors, circling October revenge match-ups on the schedule, looking at video tape from the coach's combine.

He'll be back soon, I predict. Even if none of you wankers that read this thread want to contribute, I have some mad boring stories that I intend to post over the next few weeks, he'll cave.

Canadians are pussies, obviously. By me I would sooner eat out a syphilitic street-walker than box, but I can't think of a single notable Canadian prize-fighter in my life-time.

They do make great hockey players, though - and Quebec is home to the world's best pole-dancers, so know that I'm only dissing our neighbor in the Great White North in a lame attempt to lure D2D to return.

How long can you drink on the wrong side of the tracks, pay attention to your day job, or read college football pre-view magazines, anyway?

By the way, How about them Blackhawks, eh? Two goals in seventeen seconds to beat Boston and win the Stanley Cup.

(Sorry, forgive me for straying off-topic at what has become the most depressing thread in all of cyber - space - I'm thinking of asking Labones00 and BaldGuy to join me for a beer in Trenton, that's how bad things are....)

Stop blindly following idiots who make a few good guess and then when they sink like a fuk'in rock, don't bother to resurface because they never actually knew what the fuk they were doing in the first place!

I warned this guy form the beginning he bets too many games in too many sports, with no real logical system and certainly no ability keep any real profit consistency. And sure enough, he continued to post back to back to back losers along with terrible chasing. Ask any real punter if he throws that much coin on such a wide variety of sports or numerous games. Everyone has a specialty and that's what you should focus on, his, is not baseball.

I like soccer, but I don't fuk'in bet on it because I don't know shit about it, except that some matches are definitely rigged, European ones anyway! Why piss money away on some sport whose outcome could be a draw or because some schmo has supposedly "good" info.

Think For Themselves? Now, that's Dangerous!

                                                      Hey MikeJamm,

When did it become your civic responsibility to guide the readers here of D2D's thread to think for themselves?

                                                      Bad idea.

Isn't there a (100) better way for you to spend your time?

Isn't it likely that if they try to do that, they'll be ineffective and lose more money than they are now?

Are you going to lend them rent money? Are you going to listen to their hard-luck stories?

Do you really think very many of them (us) could suddenly become effective handicappers if they (we) just started to think for ourselves? (Well, I probably could, but I'm very unusual in this regard - and even then, part of "doing my own work" would entail following threads like this, just to make sure I wasn't going opposite the big plays of a smart 'capper like D2D).

Just a few more questions: What is the mathematical basis or model you use to determine that the optimal number of bets for a good handicapper is some low figure? Why do you care so much if D2D goes above that figure?

Since you seem so intent on discouraging the degennies who enjoy this thread from doing so (and being a major buzz-kill at the same time), why don't you discourage Americans from watching tv? And teenage boys from playing video games? And teenage girls from texting their friends?

Final Question: Who died and left you in charge of preventing Americans from wasting our time?

For G-d's sake, that's what we're good at (as of 2013, just about the only thing we're good at!)

Tell ya what: I'll make a bigger effort to do my own work, and pick my own winners, and think for myself. You make a bigger effort (any effort whatsoever) to "get a life" (money, drugs, pussy, a loving family, an exercise program, practice guitar, gig out performances, that kind of stuff).

We can both report here on our progress.

I have an MLB total I like for the 11th of July, I'm not sure it will count, though, by your standards - I got the idea here from D2D.

Good luck, let me know where we can come hear you play.

Think for themselves? These nudnicks? I'd sooner suggest to a nine-year-old that he fly the Cessna to the Wal-mart in a heavy storm, do an instrument landing, pick up some socks, and come on back. If you're really civic minded, MikeJamm, you do NOT want these people thinking for themselves. Look at the presidents they elect, or the tv shows they love, or the laws they enact, or the foreign policy they promulgate. You do not want these people thinking for themselves, trust me.

This is flat out spot on!

".... don't know if it was him, but there was this guy with a Canadian accent I saw in the sports book at the Bellagi yesterday, he had this big pack of discarded tickets he was collecting off the floor and counter-tops. I was standing right next to him at one point, he seemed a little bit embarrassed but then he said to me, "Don't laugh, I found a parlay that paid $300 last week this way, the guy didn't notice there was a pitching change in one of his games." I didn't think that much of it, but then he added, 'You think there's not much value in picking up discarded tickets, I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts there's at least $50 bucks worth of pay-outs in this stack....

Any chance that that was your buddy from Canada who was so hot picking hockey and tennis winners at SBR earlier this year? I wouldn't think so but it was kind of odd to hear somebody use that exact same expression.

If I see him again (I play hold-em almost daily at the Bellagio so there's a good chance I will) I'll confront him, "You kinda sound like you're from the Great White North. I heard you throw coins at pole-dancers up there. You're not from Canada, are you, eh? "

And if he says, "Maybe I am, what about it, eh?" then I'll ask him flat-out if he used to be your friend D2D.

I'll let you know how it turns out. Meantime I've been running terrible in the 10-20 nlhe there, I gotta get back there and try to win back half of what I lost yesterday."

                                                                        Really was D2D: + 3000 (risk 100)

                                                                        Was not D2D: - 5000 (to win 100).

I know that's kind of a wide line but it is a highly speculative prop for me to deal at all, you gotta admit.
