          Used to be a network called Rizon that I'd connect to on IRC to go and find distro channels for movies. Back in 2003 or so. There were thousands of users in the channel. A couple of months ago I joined that channel to see if it was still around and only about 75 users were in there. So yeah IRC is definitely dead when it comes to wares.

              For warez? Sure, for chatting and nerds, its very much alive.

              I idle around and hang out on freenode 99 percent of the time I'm sitting on my computer, still a ton of people on there.

              Mostly techies and nerds though, regardless, it sure beats having a java chat open.
