Caps are in talks with the San Jose Sharks for his services according to sources.
Looks like a mega-deal is brewing.

Ovechkin is still one of the best players in the NHL. This would be big for San Jose.

Anyone trading for Ovie is basically making an organization-changing trade.

Trading deadline is next week. These trades don't always work because of all that you need to give up to get these high valued players. It worked for the Kings when they got Gretzky, when Vancouver got Luongo but its hard to say if it worked for the Rangers when they got Nash. Nash has been great in NY but Rangers looks average at best, while the Jackets seem to be better without Nash.
I haven't heard the Ovechkin rumors but it will be interesting if it happens.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Philly go after him. They might do some house cleaning soon. They might go after Luongo and put Giroux as bait.

Flyers would definitely have interest in Ovie but highly doubtful that Washington would trade him to a future divisional rival.
My guess is he's headed out West. Flyers would never consider a Giroux for Luongo deal.

Washington is currently sitting at 10th in the conference so, right now, they are out of the playoff picture. They are on the hook for Ovechkin to the tune of a 9.538 million cap hit with the cap coming down next year.
That is an enormous cap hit for one player. I can see their reasoning for considering trading him.

2 points out of the playoffs, playing in a crappy division, Jets suck.
Caps playing well, can easily make playoffs and even win division.

This week is going to be the determining factor for teams to decide if they are buyers or sellers. It's extremely tough this year because of the situation most teams find themselves in at this point.
Most teams are a couple of points away from either missing or making the playoffs.
Tough decisions.
If I were a bubble team, I would say fukk this season and be sellers. In this kind of market, teams are willing to overpay to make their playoff run and this year's draft is particularly deep.

Couldn't agree more, I just love randomly checking in on his twitter account to see what kind magical trades he is predicting... saw he mentioned a possible Ovi deal and just laughed... than I am on here and see almost the exact same wording that started this thread and couldn't believe people were talking about it being possible....

*Matheson also states that the Chicago Blackhawks could make sense as trading partners with the Dallas Stars and could take a shot at center Derek Roy. The Stars are likely looking for a healthy return for the talented two-way center but Matheson suggests Chicago won't give up more than a second round pick and a top prospect -- although the Blackhawks will likely be bidding against the Vancouver Canucks for Roy, so the price could certainly rise. no way would the capitals trade him unless they were getting back equal value which is almost impossible to get. Ovechkin is a superstar and no team would trade away a superstar unless they knew he could no longer perform.
