NHL probably wants to save a few bucks on jet fuel, so they keep the visiting team stay in the same city 2 nights in a row. Remember, it's a shortened season. Next season will be better; Detroit moves to the east.

Teams have their own planes. The reason this is happening is because Detroit's barn was being used for the CCHA and Philly's barn was being used for the NCAA Tourney. Its not rocket science to figure out.
