This depends at where you are at in the world. In some parts of the world they label it as 9 to 1 were the 9 is the amount you get paid total, basicly concluding that the 1 is already in the houses pocket and they give it back to in the payout. Other places the same bet and payout will labeled as 8 to 1 where its 8 what they pay you and you take back your original bet since you never lost it. This varies and changes from Casino to Casino, State to State, Country to Country and Game to Game. Everyone at one point in their gambling Career runs into this phenomenon at some point creating inevitable arguments.
