Then I discovered the stock market, which is like the same thing as gambling, except for some reason they call it investing. Right now I am totally kicking ass in the stock market after years of developing a method to handicap that sport. Eventually I will develop a method that is just as effective for the NFL. So I guess the real reason that I gamble on sports, is the challenge of picking correctly. The money that I have on a game is secondary thanks to a real paying job.
RW, you sound like my long lost brother! You even like cats! If you teach me how to make beaucoup money at the stock market I'll teach you how to grow all the ganja you could ever hope to smoke. I need a change of scenery, living here in the middle of nowhere is slowly taking my mind.

I wonder if gambling is more destructive than a drug addiction?

Some of the other reasons people gambler are:

        1. Competitive personality and try to beat the game, money does not come into play.
        2. Action like a drug

Most daily gamblers are not about the money

Action on a game is totally like a drug, on days where I have a fuller card I drink less and I smoke less pot because I'm already high screaming at the TV. And you're right about it not being about the money, JJ, for me it's about the distraction. That's why I keep my stake size small, I don't need the heavy risk in order to enjoy the activity.

This is really a thought-provoking thread. I wish I could contribute more profound thoughts to it, but I'm still engaged in self-examination after reading what's been written here.

I started because I thought I knew sports and games as well as anyone. Gambling quickly changed that. I do it now for the money, not a lot of thrill unless it is a "big game situation". SB, WS, Finals, etc.

You forgot the ever increasing divorcée market, some of which come with a rich ex-husband to mooch off of, and the young naive chicks who don't know any better than to get involved with a gambler. Minor physical deformations, too, they can identify with someone who feels he has a "damaged" psyche and is just looking to give and receive acceptance.

All is not lost, Gemoka. He who is placed on the lowest spoke of fortune's wheel is entitled to our regard; because a time will come, and the wisest knows not how soon, when all distinctions but that of goodness shall cease.

Dude, I think you calling anyone bitter and twisted may be a little of the pot calling the kettle black.

We're gamblers, we should be looking for companionship and acceptance, in whatever package they choose to present themselves. We've all got "one who got away", I know I do, but for the sake of your own sanity you have to learn to turn the page. Each day is a blessing, an opportunity to be surprised at the infinite permutations that our lives represent.

                          1. Because it is fun.
                          2. It pays for my vacations (or at least covers the hotel, food, etc)

There has been some interesting research that looks at the physiological response a person has while gambling. The action can trigger a similar response as substance abuse (particularly NT response), so the behavior reinforces the response.

So in short....gambling feels good for many people.

anything in life that instigates emotions in human beings can be considered as a drug. yes gambling makes you happy or sad on given days, can feel amazing one day, and eventually destroy you. same for drugs, same for medication, same for marriage, same for alcohol, social lives, etc...

that is why i DO NOT agree when people either make you feel like crap for gambling, and prefer having a vast social network or a wife or girlfriend. gambling is the same as all of that. they are all fake ways of making you believe ur happy, and can all end tragically, same as gambling, same as drugs.

now the not so hidden reason why i like it is simply because i find it a good way to make money. the HIDDEn reason would be because i enjoy being affected by a game WITHOUT having any say in how it will turn out. i have no control over the game and however it goes i realize it's not my doing or not my fault and the wins/losses don't feel as good/bad. i don't even make my own picks, i just use a random number generator to pick a match and then put it through a system that gives me a pick. so i have absolutely no control over anything. it takes the emotion out of it, especially if you don't watch the games and i like that feeling of not being in control.

if i could fix games, i don't even think i would bet on them regularly because i'd have too much control.
