    Haircuts: Barber, stylist or DIY?
I used to go to the barber weekly to stay looking spiffy, read the latest Sporting News magazine, and shoot the breeze with the old timers. I got so busy this summer, though, that I just bought a $15 subscription to Sporting News and one of those Norelco cordless haircutting sets with all the attachments and do it myself.

I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the results and the savings. I just stand out on the front lawn and run that thing across my head in every direction I can manage until no more hair falls off. It gives the neighbors that drive by something to chuckle about, and I never have to worry about cleanup.

My barber charged $11/haircut, so with tips I was spending $60/month and wasting a good hour on each trip considering there were always two or three guys ahead of me. When I lived in Portland, Ore. and went to a stylist it was nice getting shampooed and hot shaved, but I sure don't miss dropping $35/visit, either.

What do you guys do for haircuts? If you have someone else do it, how often do you go and what's the cost? Anyone here go to the effort of a particular hairstyle or add color, etc.?

Used to go to the barber every couple of months ($20 per after tip and all) but I am cheap so now I just go to my mothers and have her use the clippers every few months...cheap and fast. Usually get dinner out of the deal as well.

cousin cuts mine for $10, I only cut it about every 2 years though. Just had about 16" cut off last month so I'm good for another 2 years until it gets down to my ass again

Are you a midget? Your torso is only 16" long?

If your ass gets bigger you may have to cut your hair sooner.

Personally, I bought a Remington hair clipper set for $30 and cut my own every few weeks.

bought some $8 clippers about 5 years ago and they still work great...just shave it all off in 5 mins. used to spend like $12 each time to have the barber do it.

Are they the manual type madmaxx? The ones that make your thumb sore and give you carpal tunnel syndrome?

There's an old barber shop in town that still charges $8 , they really take their time too and do it right. I go there, but not very often. I believe in leaving a lot of hair on the floor when I get a haircut.

Yeah, that's the kind of barber shop that I went to. The barber is an Air Force veteran who's now active in the Knights of Columbus here. He is meticulous to a fault, and I love the hot lather for when he shaves my neck. The KoC have the best Sunday breakfast in town, $5 for all you can eat, and I'm always hollering at him back in the kitchen that he needs to wash his hands better because I found a hair in my pancake.

I don't feel bad about not sending my business his way anymore, he's always busy. He makes it up on the golf course anyhow, if I ever have a morning tee time we'll play a skins game for $20 and I have yet to win one. Hopefully someday I'll have a good enough golf stroke to hustle people on the links.

Old Time Mayberry Barber Shop. They put the steamed towel around your face for a shave, its pretty cool. Haircuts $11. I tip $4.
